Yesterday marked a landmark victory for Colorado consumers and the environment alike as Governor Jared Polis signed HB 24-1121 into law, securing the legal right for individuals to repair their own electronic equipment. This groundbreaking legislation, spearheaded by Colorado Representatives Brianna Titone and Steven Woodrow, alongside Senators Jeff Bridges and Nick Hinrichsen, and bolstered by advocacy from PIRG, CoPIRG, and Repair.org - The Repair Association dismantles the barriers manufacturers have long placed in front of consumers wishing to fix their own devices. Until now, many of us have faced the frustrating choice of either relying on authorized repair shops or, more often, discarding broken electronics and buying new ones instead. It's a well-known fact that Americans generate a staggering seven million tons of electronic waste each year. We all remember the "Three Rs" from our school days: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. But let's be honest, "Repair" is the unsung hero that deserves a spot right after "Reuse." Why? Because while recycling is crucial, it’s far more energy-efficient to keep our gadgets working than to reprocess their components into something new. Here at Blue Star, we couldn't be more thrilled about this development. We've been fervent backers of this law since its inception, with our very own Refurbishment Manager, Tom Moloney (that's me!), passionately advocating for it even before the pandemic hit.
