Toyota explains its hybrid and carbon vehicle only focus as a way of looking at market demand AND full environmental impact when compared to EV and Hybrid vehicle production and use: Toyota says the original energy source of electricity and the emissions caused by production should be factored into an EV's overall environmental impact. That would track emissions over the entire life of the vehicle. By that measure, EVs are in the same league as hybrid vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. That is because EVs may require more coal-burning power plants to recharge their bigger batteries. It is also because manufacturing EVs and their batteries can emit more carbon, thus hybrid vehicles with engines generate more emissions while in operation but less in terms of production and energy supply.
