The promise of online modes of learning is that we can reduce barriers to access and I was excited to talk about that with Forbes in this article. To realize those benefits in full, two things need to happen in society: 1. Mindset shift. We need to move away from the idea that there is 1 "best" mode of learning either online or in-person. There are certainly best practices within particular fields and for particular groups. But every child is different and their needs change with time. So we need to provide huge variety in offering modes of learning, and then help families navigate those. 2. Economic models. Money can be a barrier to accessing the best learning modes for your child. Government should play the role of enabling access but right now the funds are (almost) all delivered through the traditional public education system. To truly level the playing field, more public funds should be allocated to alternatives that can meet different learning needs. Bottom line: one size does NOT fit all.

Learning happens everywhere, not just in classrooms. Hybrid learning may still have a negative connotation for many after years of pandemic -disrupted schooling. But the challenges that districts faced implementing hybrid learning models during that time laid the foundation for what hybrid learning can be—a way for high schools to provide more equitable, rigorous, relevant, and joyful experiences for #students and #teachers.
