Road safety is public health: Lawmakers confront the challenges of changes to speed limits and road safety, and the governance complexities that make such change difficult. "The need for safer roads took on urgency during the covid pandemic... In 2022, more than 42,500 people died on American roads, and at least 7,522 pedestrians were fatally struck — the highest tally of pedestrian deaths in more than 4 decades. Experts cite several reasons for the decline in road safety. During the lockdowns, reckless driving increased while traffic enforcement declined. SUVs and trucks have become larger and heavier, thus deadlier when they hit a pedestrian. Other factors persist as streets remain wide to accommodate vehicles, and in some states speed limits have gradually increased." https://lnkd.in/e7quRtD7

Politicians should allocate road funding to where it can save lives, not to where it will win them votes in marginal electorates. That’s why the AAA's Michael Bradley spoke to ABC News Radio today about the Federal Government’s call for state government's to release more data about road trauma. With road deaths up 10.4 per cent in the past year, data about the causes of crashes, the state of our roads and the effectiveness of policing will light the way to more effective road safety interventions. Data transparency would not only save lives, but also reveal which politicians put themselves ahead of road safety. 🚸 Find out more about road data transparency at https://lnkd.in/gN-XthCd

Absolutely agree with the urgent need for data transparency in road safety. The data collected by state governments on crash causes, road conditions, and the effectiveness of police enforcement is essential for developing informed and effective road safety policies. Keeping this data secret is not just an administrative oversight—it is costing lives. With more than 100 Australians dying on our roads each week, the stakes couldn't be higher. Withholding this crucial data prevents us from addressing the rising toll of road fatalities effectively. Data transparency will not only help save lives but also ensure that funding is allocated to improve road safety genuinely rather than being influenced by political considerations. I am wholeheartedly in favour of Federal Transport Minister Catherine King's initiative to release this crucial data. It is high time we prioritise evidence-based policymaking and place the safety of Australians at the forefront. The ongoing secrecy surrounding this data is unacceptable and must be rectified to prevent further needless deaths. # RoadSafety # DataTransparency # SaveLives
📅 June 7 is a critical day for road safety in Australia. State governments collect data about causes of crashes, the state of our roads and the effectiveness of police enforcement. But most of it is kept secret. Next Friday federal and state transport ministers will meet to discuss calls by Federal Transport Minister Catherine King for the release of this critical data so it can be used to create more effective road safety policies. With more than 100 Australians killed on our roads each month and the toll increasing, data transparency will save lives and reveal whether politicians fund roads to make roads safer, or to win votes in marginal electorates. 🚸 See more at https://lnkd.in/gN-XthCd

Meghan Silva's class action against Medic Ambulance Service, Inc. alleged violations of labor laws related to on-call rest breaks. California voters passed the Emergency Ambulance Employee Safety and Preparedness Act (EAESPA), retroactively requiring emergency ambulance employees to remain reachable during shifts. In Calleros v. Rural Metro of San Diego, Inc., the Fourth District upheld the retroactive application of EAESPA, a decision contested by Silva. Despite Silva's intent to proceed, Medic filed motions, resulting in a $2,000 sanction against Silva's counsel. Silva appealed, arguing against Calleros's validity. The appeal was affirmed. Courts assess retroactive statutes' constitutionality considering Bouquet factors, analyzing state interest, reliance on prior law, and disruption caused by retroactive application. In this case, retroactive EAESPA application didn't violate due process, as it served significant public health interests. Silva lacked legitimate reliance on prior law beyond ongoing litigation, justifying EAESPA's application. Consequently, the court upheld Medic's motion, highlighting EAESPA's importance in public safety. https://lnkd.in/gHt3kg8p #LegalCase #LaborLaws #CaliforniaLaw #EmploymentLaw

📢 We think the codes of conduct that exist in Parliament should be put on a statutory footing so that they can be enforced. Trust in politics and democracy is eroded if people feel that our elected representatives are not being held to account for wrongdoing. The Ministerial Code of Conduct should be put on a statutory footing so it can be enforced. This will help rebuild trust between our elected representatives and the public and clean up politics. Let’s change the law and Clean up Politics.
