Last week, our Chicago Vistage group gathered in Wisconsin for our annual offsite. Our group of 20 small business owners spent two days processing issues & opportunities. Through these discussions, it became clear that some business models are much easier & more profitable than others. This led our chair, Kevin Kinsella, to host a conversation about the characteristics of a great business. The definition of a great business is subjective, but for this conversation, I would describe it as generating the greatest financial return with the least effort. While there are clearly many contributing factors, we settled on four primary characteristics: - Recurring revenue - High gross margins - No physical products - Low employee-to-revenue ratio Do you agree with these traits? Crafting a fitting business model doesn't have to be daunting but making sure you're covering all your bases can feel like an overwhelming task.
