New post out today with two announcements of cool projects I'm working on! A prison abolition game and a bookshop.org profile which gives you an alternative to Amazon for book purchases while supporting your local book store (or me)! Also a brief review of a new book on parole in the U.S. Check it out below! "Correction delves deep into the U.S. punishment bureaucracy and highlights the many flaws of a system focused almost entirely on retribution. The stories of several men cross with each other and with evidence of broader trends in the criminal justice system. Overall, the book proves the point that there is always a possibility of change. By comparing U.S. institutions to those of other countries, Austen shows a better world is possible, and we already know what to do to make it happen." https://lnkd.in/eC3XKfXd

Storybook Dads help parents in prison to record bedtime stories and messages for their children on CD or DVD. For many families, these story discs help build vital family relationships. It shows the children they are loved and missed. It helps prisoners to feel valued as parents and gives them the opportunity to have a positive impact on their children’s lives. Enabling an imprisoned parent to maintain contact improves their self-esteem and reduces the likelihood of re-offending as well helping with their child’s well-being. A Teenager in court tells me “Folk keep telling me I’m just like ma Da, but I don’t want to be!” When his father was the same age, I was his lawyer. He had suffered in the same way as his son. Exposed to terrible childhood adversity, stress & fear. The young lad tells me of how he is struggling to cope with life & how he can’t properly engage with the community order he is on. I explain this to the judge & how I watched his father trying to navigate the system 20 years before. The difference now is that I can articulate what is going on with my client’s lack of regulation, the anger, self soothing on drugs & alcohol. The understanding of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experience & trauma allows a greater insight on the person I represent in court. It allows a judge to listen to an EXPLANATION for poor behaviours not an excuse. Educator Stuart Shankar says “See a Child differently, see a different child”. I wish I had the knowledge I have now 20+ years ago to have tried to divert my client’s dad away from the justice system & jail. I’m probably too late to sign post his dad but not the young lad. The Judge shows him compassion & empathy. He offers him a second chance & will persevere with him & pick him up if falls on his arse. When we know better, we can do better. #SmartJustice🛠️⚖️ #TraumaInformedJustice #PoorOutcomesAreNotInevitable #UnlikeFatherTheSon

The time's 2:30 am and I'm reflecting. I'm hoping the silence of night brings clarity to the day, as I've had much to absorb. Another young person referred to our music studio project tells us they have been suspended from school. And it's like looking around this darkened room I can't help but think back to a conversation I had with a head of adult probation services and in private discussing this term they referred to as a school-to-prison pipeline. Have you ever had those occasions when you're looking for your house key, searching up and down the house, throwing this, kicking over that, blaming every member of the household including the cat for taking your key, for it to only show up in the space that's been looking you in your face the whole time! I think I've had this moment for years working with young people known to the criminal justice system, where it's only in recent times I've discovered the 'key' that's been looking me in my face the whole time. Nearly all of the young people who I have worked with who are experienced with the criminal justice system often have very similar traits such as; experienced some early trauma such as the death of a close one or the effects of an ineffective or inactive parent, being suspended/expelled from mainstream school, having learning needs such as difficulties with reading and writing, and experience with social services. An interesting fact I came across is that nearly 25% of the adult prison population has previously been in care, and nearly 50% of under-21-year-olds in contact with the criminal justice system have spent time in care... https://wix.to/TQaQQtQ #redlightbusking #youth #knifecrime #crimeprevention
