Very interesting insight. The informal sector is often overlooked to the detriment of brands and retail; even SARS and StatsSA.
Observing from the outside in, as part of my #thinkdisruption journey, I notice some key differences between informal & formal retail. Listening to suppliers, brands and retailers, it seems, tqhat spend is being re-directed to informal offerings. Clearly it is not an "either/or" but an "and" conversation, yet it makes sense to ask why the informal sector is growing whilst the formal part -by and large- is struggling. I am looking forward to explore & learn, with like-minded partners, about the next (last?) frontier of Retail Growth. To my mind, profit-enabled impact, i.e. profit generated by uplifting people is the key to unlock value for both, small and corporate players.
