On Monday, ROSA Research Director, Michael Pol, and Research Project Manager, Patricia Perez, will be attending the Annual Meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Day 1 will focus on the Cumulative Effects of Offshore Wind on Fisheries. Tricia will share insights into the research needs within FishFORWRD and the ROSA team looks forward to participating in the Cumulative Impacts Workshop led by NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center Offshore Wind and Ecology Branch. See you there! MAC Annual Meeting: https://lnkd.in/e_6TqwZP FishFORWRD: https://lnkd.in/d_DT5FSX

Citizen science projects can help answer important research questions with the help of members of the public. Do you have an idea for a citizen science project you think would answer questions about South Atlantic fisheries? Submit your idea through the Citizen Science Program’s Project Idea Portal! Ideas submitted through the portal help the Program identify research priorities that guide future project development. Your idea could lead to the next citizen science project that provides insight into South Atlantic fisheries. Submit your idea here: https://lnkd.in/e4Wa7XAZ #SAFMCcitsci #CitizenScience #CitSciFri

Great new paper on surplus production models for fisheries stock assessments. surplus production models are basically the foundation of bio-economic models in fisheries except many economists haven't kept up with the biological literature. This paper provides a nice overview and guide for the current state of the art in suplus production models, with hints on when to use them, when not to use them, their strengths and weaknesses and how to estimate them properly. This should be of interest to fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, fisheries economists and anyone else who wants to know what these people do for a living. https://lnkd.in/dQDZGesp #fisheriesscience #fisheriesmanagement #fisherieseconomics #surplusproductionmodels #differentialequations #populationbiology

Interdisciplinary Seminar Presentation at BSMRAU Attended an insightful seminar presentation where a professor from the Soil Science department presented their research. The presentation was critically reviewed by a Fisheries professor, while the session was chaired by an Environmental Science professor. A great example of how cross disciplinary collaboration enriches research outcomes! #Research #Seminar_Presentation #BSMRAU #Interdisciplinary #SoilScience #Fisheries #EnvironmentalScience

What does the future hold for recreational angling in the Nordic countries according to researchers, practitioners and industry experts?🎣 We used a Delphi study with 93 angling experts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to find out!🔍 Read about the experts' views on drivers of angling participation (https://doi-org/10.1111/fme.12735, led by Stian Stensland) and expected trends in angler behavior (https://lnkd.in/dQjjpWHB, led by yours truly) in two articles published in Fisheries Management and Ecology's Special Issue on Recreational Fisheries.

#PacificFisheries | 🐙𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? It is likely that we are currently underestimating the value of octopus fisheries in the Pacific. National studies emphasise their contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but we don’t often get the full picture. To improve the management of octopus fisheries in the Pacific, we need to increase knowledge about the stock status of octopuses in the Pacific. And we need data: ▶️ length, ▶️ weight, ▶️ maturity status ▶️ age 👇This neatly detailed and illustrated article outlines protocols to gather data and to build our understanding of octopus biology, ecology and identification. So you can get involved too if you are interested in this area! Ambitious plans for the future of freshwater pearl mussels are now underway in the Cairngorms National Park 🌿 Working closely with the Spey Fisheries Board and the Spey Catchment Partnership, we’re developing strategies which will first focus on safeguarding the existing populations, and then on population reinforcement. The work will include plans to move threatened populations under licence, to catchment areas with better habitat. Using innovative techniques such as eDNA monitoring, we hope to identify remnant populations and pinpoint where action is needed 🔍 Long term plans include the possibility of captive rearing which could be a suitable step towards reinforcing the mussel population on the River Dee, which has seen a severe decline following the devastating impacts of Storm Frank. 1moThis should offer a useful comparison with the cumulative effects of our energy status quo that we are already experiencing including warming oceans, failed fisheries, rising seas, and coastal destruction.
