Congatulations to Dr Trinidad Montero-Melendez from the William Harvey Research Institute, who has been awarded funding for her study developing new therapies for #autoimmune diseases associated with chronic inflammation. The funding has been awarded by the Lorna and Yuti Chernajovsky Biomedical Research Foundation as part of the Connect Immune Research Initiative - a charity partnership aiming to understand how autoimmune diseases are linked and exploring how best to tackle multiple conditions simultaneously. Dr. Montero-Melendez's research involves targeting melanocortin receptors, a class of proteins that play a crucial role in the body's natural defence mechanisms. By enhancing the activity of these receptors, the new drugs aim to control inflammation in a manner that mimics the body's natural processes. This approach has the potential to produce safer and more effective treatments for a range of autoimmune conditions. #research

Could compounds from common garden flowers help treat serious diseases? For years, undergraduate students at the University of Portland painstakingly ground up common garden flowers and isolated different molecules from them in an effort to find the next big health breakthrough. They found a promising compound called sulfuretin. Following that lead, scientists at Oregon Health & Science University tested sulfuretin on cells in the lab. They found the flower-derived compound successfully blocked a problematic substance called hyaluronidase, which can encourage the progression of multiple sclerosis and some cancers. Supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as part of their Patient-Partnered Collaboration Study, Fanny Elahi, MD, PhD at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is leading a multi-disciplinary team to use blood donated by participants to: (1) characterize your immune system; (2) test the connection between any immune system differences detected with clinical symptoms; (3) identify molecular biomarkers (such as proteins) that can track disease progression; and (4) leverage obtained molecular signatures in blood to build biological models of blood vessels in a dish. All these will build the critical foundation to reach the ultimate goal of screening drugs for discovery of treatments for #CADASIL, to slow progression of symptoms and eventually prevent onset of disease. Blood samples and other standard assessments (brief medical exam, brain imaging, and memory tests)are needed from individuals living with CADASIL and from healthy volunteers (family members, friends). As Director of the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research at Temple University and a professor at the University of Siena, he underscores the importance of collaboration, transparency, and robust funding in scientific research. American scientific research faces significant challenges, including funding, regulation, and public perception. Overcoming these requires collective effort, sound policies, and adequate funding. Dr. Giordano stresses that international collaboration, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, is indispensable for tackling global issues such as climate change, infectious diseases, and food security. Traditional approaches, including animal testing, may not accurately represent human brain characteristics. Our project offers a novel solution using stem cells to construct miniaturized brain models, including the critical blood-brain barrier, which is often compromised in brain diseases. #BrainDiseaseResearch 🧬 These personalized "Avatars" of patients' brains enable us to capture crucial disease aspects, paving the way for personalized treatments.
