👩🏫 It's always fab to spend time with our clients, never more so than when I can be helping future talent find their way in the #EarlyCareers space. 👋 As the #PlacementStudents at Sony Europe come to the end of their year in industry we talked about the challenges of the #Graduate marketplace, the competition (avg of 86 candidates per graduate role (Institute of Student Employers data), and key differentiators and resources. Some great questions as ever regarding #AI, #PsychometricTests, and the incredible variable assessment process. 💭 Key takeaways: • Do your research - know who you are, who you want to work with (it's a mutual choice), and why it should be you • Attend events - virtual work experience, in-person, or 'chat with' sessions (if there isn't, it may well prompt them to start) • Register your interest - Don't be slow (think of those 85 other super keen candidates). Have that CV and content ready, and fill in all the boxes on the ATS (accurately, with the correct case and spelling, and add in all your key skills) • Ask for accommodations if needed • Be brave - seek the opportunities, and acknowledge and showcase your achievements - own it! • Be tenacious, and patient - keep at it, it can take a while. Another #internship opportunity for U.S. Department of Labor scrutiny. It’s not clear whether the employer will pay at least minimum wage, if the candidate has already graduated and therefore will not get college credit. Yet it is clear this is a job and the person doing it will have duties essential to the #business operations. As I head into the 6th week of my senior year at the University of Florida, I want to recap my internship experience at ESPN this summer. This summer I was a Transmission Intern at ESPN up in Bristol Connecticut. When I first stepped onto the campus I was absolutely terrified. I had just traveled over 1,000 miles for a position I didn't even think I was capable of understanding. As I met the team on my first day, I was introduced to so many work streams, industry terms, and technical terms. To say that I was overwhelmed was an understatement. But as the weeks progressed and I got more comfortable with the team, I dug in and learned as much as I could. I met with leaders from across the business and I trained as hard as I possibly could as a Transmission Operator. As a transmission operator, it is our job to get a signal (satellite, fiber, or IP) from a venue back to our plant in Bristol to then air to ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN+, etc. Essentially, my job was to train in a software system called IRM. The system manages the resources we have available to us to receive and send feeds. Initially, I watched over the shoulders of the operators on the team to get a conceptual understanding of the system. Then, I started to operate with a trainer at my side. Once I got a feel for the system, I began answering phone calls from people all over the world, calling in about problems with their feeds, trying to get resources assigned to broadcasts, etc. Diving right in and troubleshooting diverse issues allowed me to progress in my role rather quickly. By week 9 I cleared in the IRM role. At this point, I could now operate "in the chair" on my own. My manager Aaron Bates noted that I was the fastest operator to clear in the role since they started tracking training hours. This would not have been possible without the help of my core group of trainers Peyton Smith, Timothy LeBlanc, and Michael Santana who put in countless hours to teach me how to be an IRM Transmission Operator. I'm also so grateful to Steve Simeonidis, Aaron Bates, Vinny Thibeau, Sari, Aimee, Joe Hickey, and the entire Transmission Management team for all the support. I cannot explain how much this summer has helped me in my career and personal journey. I'm very excited for everything that my senior year in college has to offer and where my career will go in the coming months. #espn #intern #sports #broadcast #media #career
