⚡️ Six months into the World Bank’s Mission 300, sub-Saharan African governments are meeting to discuss the next phase of attracting $90bn in private investment to tackle the region’s energy gap. 🌍 Mission 300 aims to bring electricity to 300mn people by 2030 through grid expansion and off-grid solar solutions, supported by the World Bank, AfDB, and partners like the Rockefeller Foundation. 🔑 Private sector investment remains crucial but elusive, with reforms to national energy frameworks key to unlocking new capital. Addressing regulatory barriers and supporting decentralised solutions for rural communities are essential to ensure sustainable, widespread access to clean energy. 💡 Will these efforts be enough to overcome Africa’s massive energy investment challenges? In the short to medium term, electricity generation and distribution needs to be decentralised and localized to community level. This allows for electrification despite struggling T&D, helps power reach far-flung areas, and protects users from national inefficiencies. It also helps us design interventions to drive rural industrialization (and the resulting employment, and higher farmer incomes) which is key for economic growth. The youth bulge, our producer economies, and vast renewable energy resources are opportunities that are convergent and should be leveraged for green industrialization. The goal however is that in the long-term, for electricity access to be borderless. The 100GW flowing down the Congo River should be distributable to East and Southern Africa, Cameroon's vast hydro resources should serve the region frictionlessly. This was my message on my first panel slot representing INENSUS gmbh at the Future of Energy Show in Johannesburg.

High capital costs are stalling clean energy investment across Africa. Though-provoking findings in new report from Clean Air Task Force "As African nations strive to expand energy access to fuel economic growth, the study reveals that the average Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) in Africa stands at an alarming 15.6% – over three times higher than in developed regions like Western Europe and the U.S., where rates typically range between 2% and 5%". Central Africa is at a critical juncture in its energy governance, which could shape its energy future. The region faces pressing challenges, including energy poverty, limited electricity access, and the need for a just and sustainable energy transition. In addition, financial challenges pose a significant obstacle to the energy transition, especially in the provision of affordable and reliable energy, deployment of renewable energy sources, and the roll-out of a large-scale power grid infrastructure network across the region, which requires comprehensive financing approaches involving public, private, and multilateral sources. This brief published on the Social Science Research Network Journal, that I co-authored along with colleagues from the University of Delaware and the African Development Bank Rhoda Mshana Freda Akyeabea Opoku , highlights the challenges conventional national energy governance systems face, the critical importance of regional cooperation in energy governance, and provides practical recommendations for improved and reliable energy access in Central Africa. Gratefull to trigger some interesting discussions and receive your feedback and insights on the paper. https://lnkd.in/gmV6Tu8B
