CRM is simultaneously a really simple topic, and also a complicated one for many industrial B2B firms. Here's what I mean. On the one hand, it's really simple. Reps must use it; it's a condition of employment. They need to use it for several reasons: - it makes them more effective and efficient - the information captured is company property - proper use reduces errors and dropped balls - it reinforces sales process and improves forecast accuracy - it eliminates duplicate, time wasting steps like excel tracking On the other hand, it's complicated. I see two common scenarios. Either companies try to use it out of the box (including the generic sales pipeline) or it's turned into an excruciating customization project. The former reduces the value for everyone, and leads reps to say "screw it." The latter distorts the goal - from a helpful system that's easy to use to some utopian impossibility that's a distant IT vision. Companies spend tens and hundreds of thousands hiring dedicated employees and engaging long-term consultants.....just to use their CRM. And those folks believe (I'm sure sincerely) that there's no alternative. But as Upton Sinclair wrote "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it." 😬 The optimal answer lies somewhere in the middle, and one great example is the use of custom objects. In the capital equipment space particularly, companies need custom objects to track: - SN details and related info - order history (related to but distinct from quotes and deals) - warranty information (related to but distinct from SN) - tickets (this may be a standard object) The simple (yes, it should be) step of adding these will massively enhance the value of the CRM investment for the company.
