John Pletz, senior reporter, technology, aviation, and cannabis, Crain's Chicago Business, met on Nov. 19 in Chicago with Tom Siebel, chairman and CEO, C3 AI, a leading enterprise AI software provider. (Disclosure: C3 AI is a client.) Siebel was in Chicago to announce C3 AI and Microsoft's strategic alliance to scale Enterprise AI adoption on Microsoft Azure globally. Siebel has invested millions in his alma mater, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to ensure its leadership in data science, computing, and AI. Please read below in Pletz's post about Siebel's vision for the accelerated adoption of AI and generative AI in the enterprise.
Tom Siebel is one of the OG's of Silicon Valley who started an AI company long before there was a ChatGPT. I caught up with him this week when he was in town for an announcement with Microsoft. Here's some of what he says you should know about AI, the hype vs. reality, why it matters and how it's moving the needle for real-world users. • Two years after ChatGPT was unleashed, we still don't quite know what to make of generative AI and its predecessors. “It’s confusing to the people in it; it’s confusing to media; it’s confusing to investors,” he says. “It’s confusing to the corporations who try to buy it and we’re not helping them out.” • But that's not going slow its adoption. AI “probably happens at twice the speed of the internet, and in 10 years there’s no application that won’t be an AI application — and you won’t even know AI is there,” he says.
