November is #LungCancerAwarenessMonth and we are proud to continue to make advances in research for patients with lung cancer. We recently conducted a study of more than 5,000 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer and found that concurrent RNA and DNA based next-generation sequencing led to the detection of more actionable structural variants compared to DNA sequencing alone. These findings, published in JAMA Network Open, suggest that concurrent RNA and DNA testing should be more widely implemented in clinical settings to maximize the detection of structural variants. A DNA Origami Nanoswitch to Induce Cancer Cell Death Folding DNA into intricate structures has produced intriguing basic research for a while now. Today, I saw a really neat application in the field of cancer therapy: When properly exposed to specific cells, the death receptor 5 cluster induces cell death.  Björn Högberg and colleagues designed a nanometer-sized pH-switch using the transition from double-stranded DNA to triple-stranded DNA to either hide or expose the death receptor 5 ligand cluster. The pH change was induced in a tumor microenvironment, and this forced the nanoswitch to expose its ligands, killing tumor cells. The technology is at an early stage and has yet to overcome many hurdles.
