🇪🇺 Private Debt Investor features our investment strategy in the CEE region.   With the volume of capex financing provided by banks to local SMEs in Poland, adjusted for inflation and GDP growth, halving over the last five years, these companies are turning to alternative sources of funding such as private debt.   CVI is currently targeting €300 million for its second institutional direct lending fund focused on Central Europe. Today, I am sharing a significant development: ILTE Lietuva has partnered with European Investment Fund (EIF) to allocate nearly €200 million to promote private debt funds in Lithuania. We frequently discuss how difficult it is for companies operating in Lithuania to get funding from traditional sources. The main reasons for this include banks' insufficient risk appetite, limited competition, underdeveloped capital markets, and other factors.   In Western countries, the private debt asset class represents a significant volume and is not far behind private equity. This level of development is not yet seen in Lithuania. I have no doubt that our partnership with the EIF will lay the foundation for developing private debt as an alternative source of financing in our country.   Private debt funds will not only provide financing but will also offer new investment opportunities for pension funds, family investment offices, and other professional investors operating in the country or across the region.   The funds allocated by ILTE and EIF are expected to be complemented by €100 million from private investors, bringing the total to €300 million, which will be available to finance a wide range of projects for Lithuanian companies. Another important development in the partnership between ILTE and EIF is that the selection process will be significantly simplified, so teams will not need to go through it twice. I invite all asset management companies to take an active interest and apply for our investment in your planned private debt funds.

Last week, I stepped on stage of the very first Private Debt Baltic Forum in Vilnius. In my talk, I painted a broader picture about the overall financing trends and how are the businesses financed. Taking a long-term perspective and comparing where Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian companies were back in 2007 and where they stand now – the development has been huge. Not only there is much more capital made available to the corporates, but also the sources are much more diverse. Back in 2007, it was basically just bank and stock exchange (only the primary market). Now, we have the alternative market, PE/VC funds, bonds – and the biggest change of all, pension fund investments! The outlook is also positive, I would argue. Yes, currently we do not have many international financial investors – but at some point, they will return. And we do have (and will continue to have) strong local capital, who support local initiatives. I would also argue that as the companies have been putting off some of the investments due to overall uncertainty in the economy and as there is an additional layer of green transition, setting new requirements – there will be many more investments to be done by businesses in the upcoming years. More investments = more investment opportunities. And it was great to come over to Vilnius and spend a full day enjoying great discussions with market participants.
