Why are so many organisations insisting on forcing employees back to the office? Yes, there are some roles that just cannot be remote, such as retail and manufacturing. But for those that can, what is it that's making companies feel that their culture is being so badly impacted? Boots recently announced that from September, all their employees must come back to work 5 days a week in the office. On it's own, this might not sound unusual, but how aligned is this to their values? How much of the issues of remote and flexible working is down to organisations unable to create tangible objectives, leaving managers suspicious of employees? And for those who choose to work remotely, is there is risk that they become relegated to missing out on career development and promotions, because 'out of sight, out of mind'? Remote and flexible working isn't going anywhere. Organisations often struggle with employees' reluctance to adapt to change, but is it organisations now that are holding change back? In the latest #CTN podcast, "Mastering the Inspiring Hybrid Workplace Recipe," Andy Bennett, Senior VP, Commercial Sales, Crestron Electronics, explores the challenges and opportunities of hybrid workplace. Andy emphasizes the need to rethink workplace culture and set clear expectations based on roles. For example, engineers may be more productive at home due to fewer distractions, while sales roles might need in-person interactions for better productivity. Instead of evaluating productivity broadly, managers should focus on specific contributions to help employees see their impact on the business. Tune in for strategies on creating an engaging office environment and how technology can boost productivity and collaboration. This didn't occur to me for years. Flexibility isn't just about location. It's about time flexibility. It was data from the Future Forum research that really illuminated this to me. And it was also something I experienced in my own life. In 2010, I got permission to move to live WHERE I wanted to live and became a remote work experiment for a company I loved. But it did come with an impact to the flexibility of WHEN I worked due to me being located in a time zone 3 hours ahead of the majority of my team. Now, 14 years later, I work with teams to help them become effective in distribute, hybrid, and remote environments. This has become a central part of the intentional discussions we facilitate with teams - to create coordination in HOW the work gets done within the complexity of flexibility of WHEN and WHERE work gets done. Listen to what leaders need to do to actuate hybrid working, reinvigorate the office, and improve the workplace experience. I had a great time discussing these critical topics on Mike Petrusky's #WorkplaceInnovator podcast. We delved into the current state of the workplace, examining both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. During the podcast, we covered some key tips that leaders should consider: 🔥 Companies should designate a leader specifically to address #HybridWorking and #WorkplaceExperience issues. Learn who is best equipped to spearhead this. 🔥 Treating hybrid working as a transformational event is crucial, shifting away from small incremental changes—like #RTO #Attendance policies. 🔥 It's essential to prioritize benefits not just for individuals, but for the team and the business. 🔥 Leaders must understand the consequences of their decisions on employees, particularly when it comes to restricting flexibility. Tools like Experience per Square Foot™ at Cushman & Wakefield provide the data and insight to back up decision-making. 🔥 What is the new purpose of the office, and does it align with what employees perceive? Spoiler alert—it doesn't. To gain valuable insights and practical strategies for navigating these complex workplace dynamics, check out the full conversation. Many leaders see "winning" as productivity at all costs. But true Leaders (with a capital L) know productivity is not the only outcome... Jennifer Riel said it perfectly in our foHRsight podcast chat (comng out this Thursday!): “The notion that any one thing can be done (e.g., working from an office) to maximize productivity is a false assumption. Without the boundaries and constraints of human considerations like engagement, well-being, burnout, belonging, etc., chasing productivity can in fact be [counter-productive] and dangerous.” How and where we work needs to shift from a policy to a strategy. Define the problem. Ask ourselves "what is the desired outcome?" Then act (then iterate). This is how we get hybrid right. Here are two frameworks to tackle hybrid working more strategically: 1) Design thinking: start with users and their unmet needs 2) Integrative thinking: start with the tension of opposing ideas Want to learn more? Download your copy of Our foHRsight Q2 2024: Hybrid Working is Here to Stay. Link in comments below. PS: What are some other ways we can tackle hybrid working more strategically?
