IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH YOUNG ATHLETES, YOU GET TO SPREAD HAPPY EVERYDAY. Here are some ways to do that:
1. CREATE A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT for youth and teens to open up about their challenges, fears, and goals. Express empathy for setbacks, do active listening, and show respect for their unique experiences.
2. DEVELOP A STRONG COACHING RELATIONSHIP: Build rapport with kids to establish mutual trust and understanding. Maybe that means asking about their Squishmallow collection or their favorite singer. This will allow you to have open, honest, and fun conversations that foster a trusting relationship.
3. CUSTOMIZE COACHING SESSIONS: Each child is unique and learns in their own way. Learn how they learn, and adapt your approach accordingly.
4. UTILIZE EVIDENCE-BASED TECHNIQUES: Stay up-to-date with the latest research and practices in mental performance coaching and youth development. Incorporate proven techniques such as goal-setting, visualization, self-reflection, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral strategies into your sessions.
5. ENCOURAGE SELF-AWARENESS AND REFLECTION: Help clients develop a deeper understanding of their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and triggers. Encourage regular self-reflection to identify areas for improvement and recognize patterns that impact mental performance. Many of my clients journal, and we also use The The 3 Post-Performance Questions (The 3PPQs): What went well? What did I learn about me? What do I want to change for next time?
6. FILL THEIR MINDSET TOOLBOX: Equip clients with practical skills and strategies that they can apply in their daily lives. This helps the work become sustainable long after you have completed your sessions together. My goal is that each young athlete eventually does not need me :-)
7. MAINTAIN CONFIDENTIALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM: Ensure client confidentiality and maintain professional ethics throughout the coaching process. Create clear boundaries and clarify expectations with your young client regarding privacy and confidentiality so that kids can create healthy boundaries in their own lives.
8. CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: Commit to ongoing professional development and education. Attend workshops, conferences, and competitions, and engage in supervision or peer mentoring to enhance your knowledge and skills.
9. PUT YOUR EGO ASIDE: Since competition is enacted in public, it is imperative that you do not attach the athlete's results to your brand as a coach. Do not burden them with the expectation that they are also promoting you. If you're good at what you do, you're good, and you'll feel it and they will, too.
10. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you have child abuse, criminal background, and FBI clearances for extra assurance of your trustworthiness working with minors.
By incorporating these guiding principles, you can provide caring, effective, and trustworthy mental performance coaching for our young athletes.
