🚨 Tackling Homelessness: UK Government Inquiry Underway. The HCLG Committee has launched an inquiry into the UK Government’s handling of rough sleeping in England. With homelessness at record levels—over 320,000 households affected in 2023–2024—this investigation will examine the root causes, recent increases, and potential solutions. Economic challenges, housing shortages, and gaps in support systems are all under scrutiny, with the goal of shaping better strategies to combat homelessness and ensure support for the most vulnerable. It’s time for action to make a lasting change.

The UK National Audit Office has published a new report on government effectiveness in tackling homelessness. Key findings include: · Homelessness has increased in recent years and is now at the highest level since comparable data collection began in the early 2000s. · A shortage of available housing makes it expensive for local authorities to house people in temporary accommodation, as well as harder for people to find a home. · Local authority spending on homelessness services has more than doubled since 2010-11. This puts severe financial strain on councils, with some telling the NAO that homelessness pressures could result in them issuing a Section 114 notice – effectively a declaration of bankruptcy. Central government’s funding arrangements for local authorities’ homelessness services remain “complex, fragmented, and sometimes uncertain”. The NAO's analysis shows why a new approach to tackling homelessness is urgently required. Cllr Grace Williams, our Executive Member for Housing & Regeneration, said: "As this report clearly demonstrates, government policy could be far more effective in tackling homelessness and getting to grips with its underlying causes. Better co-ordination across government departments, greater housing security, sufficient funding for councils, and more investment in building affordable homes are key to turning the situation around." Exciting news on the fight against homelessness! The government is making commendable strides towards tackling the complex issue of homelessness in our society. The recent creation of a dedicated task force, as mentioned in this article by The Big Issue (https://lnkd.in/eEM28jQF), is certainly a step in the right direction. In particular, the decision to involve a cross-party approach is worthy of applause. Collaboration across the political aisle can harmonize a range of ideas and strategies to resolve this crisis. It shows a thorough understanding that homelessness is not a partisan issue; rather it's a humanitarian concern we must all unite to address. As we move forward, here's hoping this initiative guarantees a sensible, inclusive, and comprehensive outcome, offering a sustainable solution to all those experiencing homelessness. Let’s be hopeful this sets a precedent for other pressing matters that require our collective effort. Let us know your thoughts and if there's anything you or your organization are doing to help with this issue. #homelessness #governmentinitiative #crosspartycollaboration

Homeless spending triples in decade🚨 According to new analysis from the Local Government Association, the percentage of total housing budget that councils are spending on homelessness and temporary accommodation has tripled since 2015. Council spending for homelessness in 2023-24 increased by £733 million in comparison to 2015/16, bringing investment to £1.048 billion.💰 This has come alongside a call for the next government to reset its relationship with local government and ease the pressure being placed on council budgets. A striking report from Homelessness Australia and UNSW released today found 10,000 more Australians are experiencing rough sleeping each month, a 22% increase in three years, with the housing crisis cited as the major driver. The report also found homelessness services have reported a 12% rise in monthly caseloads since 2019-20, plus an increase in employed people seeking support. As a community housing provider and specialist homelessness service, we have also seen an increase in people needing help with housing. We echo the authors’ finding that “adequate provision of social housing is crucial in reducing homelessness” and that the potential of the current funding commitments to increase supply are to be celebrated (p.124). We need more social and affordable homes, and more bipartisan political support for them, to best tackle this escalating crisis. For me tackling our #housing and #homelessness crisis should be right up there on the top of all State Govt agenda's. But yet again a program that is helping house people in chronic need is under threat, apparently to help balance the budget. As a community we must prioritise the housing of all citizens. We must recognise the damage that homelessness, sub-standard and insecure housing and housing stress have on our health and ability to live a full and productive life. https://lnkd.in/gervrYJe

The UK has the highest rate of homelessness among high-income countries. And it’s only getting worse. The figures reveal there’s been a staggering 12.3% increase in homelessness this year alone. We asked people across the UK how they feel about this growing emergency. Here’s what we found: 🏘️ Nearly half of young adults (47%) aged 16-34 are worried that they or someone they know could become homeless within the next 12 months. 📋 73% of people say that having a home is a fundamental human right that must be protected by law. 🏘️ Most UK adults (72%) agree that homelessness is a major problem and needs urgent government action. These aren’t just numbers—they are real lives at stake
A record number of people in the UK are experiencing homelessness. Without swift action, the crisis will only get worse. We must act now.

Just catching up properly with this UK National Audit Office report. Hidden in it, is a great reccommendation that the Gocernment should set itself an actual target to reduce statutory homelessness rates - and therefore the number of families stuck homeless in temporary accommodation. It says it will help drive the cross-government efforts which are so necessary to provide effective support and solutions. I often think those of us who are interested in tackling and preventing increasing rates of child and family homelessness can learn from the successful efforts to properly tackle rough sleeping - perhaps this is one of the lessons the Government can take?
