After 5 years of broken promises, yesterday's #KingsSpeech was an encouraging start to the new Government's promise to improve life for renters: They confirmed plans to: 🚪❌ban on no-fault evictions 🐈 Improve renter's rights 🏚️ Extend recent social housing safety rules, known as Awaab’s Law, into private rented housing. We gave evidence on the Renters' Rights Bill to the Public Bill Committee this week, with our Head of Policy and Campaigns Timothy Douglas emphasising the need to retain a fixed term option, incentivise landlords to avoid shrinking the PRS, and extend student grounds. Because of you our members, Timothy was able to give evidence from leading letting agents to support our cause with statistics surrounding the want from tenants and landlords alike to retain the fixed term tenancy in addition to periodic. Strong points were made throughout the session that without any incentives for landlords to remain in the sector, there is a high risk that many will move to the unregulated short-term lets sector that can also impact local communities.
