The result of a New Dutch press trip we recently organised in collaboration with NBTC | Nederlands Bureau voor Toerisme & Congressen. Gavin Haines writes about how ‘sponge cities’ could cut the risk of flooding disasters and uses the Hofbogenpark by De Urbanisten as an example. 💦 “It’s one of a handful of projects designed to absorb floodwater, boost biodiversity and improve access to nature in Rotterdam. In Medellín’s green corridors, temperatures are 4.5˚C cooler! The green corridor initiative in Medellín not only helped reduce temperatures but also cut air pollution. Green corridors – areas that are landscaped to promote more biodiversity – provide natural shade for urban areas. They also reduce heat levels through a process called evapotranspiration, which introduces water vapour into the environment. The city of Medellin is seeing wonders by integrating biophilia in different ways in the city, green corridors being one of the most important aspects. Reducing urban heat island effects, mitigating air and noise pollution in our cities is the need of the hour e this simple solution can help. Besides this can lower ambient temperatures making the streets feel slightly more pedestrian friendly in an otherwise rising global temperature phenomenon. While we see some efforts being done in some parts of Mumbai and other Indian cities, focused efforts on greening at a city wide scale must be implemented.

Landscape Architects are allies in the fight of Climate Change effects in urban environments…City councils should create more greenier spaces in urban areas, using all sustainable landscaping solutions including vertical gardens to try and lower urban temperatures, reduce the impact of air pollution, increase cover/shade for people, make people happier with multicolored gardens…
