𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒚𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕? What comes to mind when you think of retirement? For me, passé images of lazing around on an idyllic beach in Hawaii sipping that elusive cocktail surface…🍹 (But ask anyone who retired, they will tell you such a romantic notion of an idyllic life can probably last you 6 months before you are restless again) What’s the fastest way to get there? 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 (Financial Independence, Retire Early) 🔥 so you can fire your boss? This may work for tech executives in Silicon Valley earning big bucks, suffering burnt outs and wanting to get out of the rat race asap. What about for the majority of middle income workers with kids and furkids to raise? (Also suffering from burnt out minus the big bucks) Would 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌 (Financial Independence, Retire Meaningfully) be a more viable option? Says Ms Lorna Tan, head of financial planning literacy at DBS Bank: “Work towards your financial freedom and, at the same time, understand your life purpose and align your money goals so they support your life purpose”. 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞. These two words give immeasurable energy. And warrants sincere soul searching and many deep conversations. Aren’t we all on a lifetime quest in search for meaning? Can work be more than just paying bills and putting Xiao Long Bao on the table? We are living longer. How dreadful if work is but a dread. How wonderful if we discover our life purpose and can redefine what work means to us. Then perhaps we never have to retire! We can work towards Financial Independence, 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐲𝐫𝐞 Meaningfully! To quote Bernard Lim, entering into a time of 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐲𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 is to go into a workshop, change your tyres and be good as new, ready to go! 🛞 🛞 With reference to article here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gFFcazMq #foodforthought #work #retirement #retyrement #meaning #money #financialwellness #financialfreedom #financialindependence

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) Movement – Part 1 – The Pros to following this movement Yesterday I introduced the concept of the FIRE movement - Is FIRE the right strategy for you and your family? Let’s consider the Pros of this ambitious aspiration The Pros: Even if you don’t achieve your goal of earlier retirement, the discipline of saving, investing, watching your budget closely, ensuring your cash inflows exceed your cash outflows is beneficial to your financial wellbeing. FIRE imposes frugality and many see it as a way to live a better life, be freer, work less, have less impact on the planet. They believe in spending money when it matters, for example, travelling when you're young enough. FIRE forces you to think about the lifestyle you want, figure out how much it costs at your target age, adjust for inflation, and then stop when you reach your financial goal. FIRE may save your health and life if you have a high stress, high commute time job and may also improve your mental health by leaving a toxic workplace. Mobility and health issues tend to wear down retirees in their 60s, 70s and 80s where they cannot travel, if travel is a goal. Retiring early while still healthy, mobile and vibrant could be a real plus. If you want to start a business that is more in line with your values and desired lifestyle, retiring early would allow you to pursue this dream. You may have more time if you retire early for friends, family, hobbies and new passions to discover. Employment is not a panacea for everyone – some view it as “soul draining”. Employment occupies, for many folks following a traditional path, 4 decades of their lives and requires much mental and sometimes physical output. Tomorrow I will outline the Cons of FIRE. #earlyretirement #FIREmovement #financialliteracy

🌟 Is it too early to retire? 🌟 Ever find yourself pondering this question? 🤔 You're not alone! Many of us grapple with the idea of retirement and whether it's the right time to take that leap. Here are some tips to overcome that mental block and make a confident decision: 1. **Evaluate Your Finances 💰**: Take a close look at your savings, investments, and potential retirement income. Consulting a financial advisor can provide clarity and peace of mind. 2. **Set Clear Goals 🎯**: What do you want to achieve in retirement? Whether it's traveling, pursuing hobbies, or spending more time with family, having a clear vision can make the decision easier. 3. **Test the Waters 🌊**: Consider a phased retirement or taking a sabbatical to see how you feel about a slower pace of life. This can help you adjust gradually. 4. **Stay Active and Engaged 🏃♀️**: Retirement doesn't mean stopping everything. Stay involved in activities you love, volunteer, or even start a new venture. Keeping busy can ease the transition. 5. **Seek Support 🤝**: Talk to friends, family, or a mentor who has already retired. Their experiences and advice can provide valuable insights. Remember, retirement is a personal journey, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Trust your instincts and make the choice that's best for you! 🌈✨ #RetirementGoals #LifeAfterWork #FinancialFreedom #MindsetMatters #NewBeginnings #RetirementPlanning #OvercomeFear #LiveYourBestLife

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) Movement – Part 2 – The Cons to following this movement After my introduction to FIRE in a previous post, I then outlined the Pros for following the FIRE movement. Is FIRE the right strategy for you and your family? Let’s consider the Cons of this ambitious aspiration. The Cons: FIRE locks you in at a certain range of income for the rest of your life, with limited opportunities to increase it – well not entirely – perhaps you will inherit some money or you are a wizard at investing. What about you if have kids and decide you need more space and a bigger house? What if you decide you want to travel the world, or throw a large wedding for your daughter/son? What if you decide that you want certain luxuries. Can you predict that you will be content with your income you have now for the next 4 decades or so if you retire in your 40s? It's not easy getting back into the workforce after being out of it for multiple years. Especially after you had, understandably, stopped keeping up with career-related skills. Large stock market and commodity drops (such as occurred just recently globally), periods of high inflation and various other financial emergencies including health costs or paying for a retirement home can very much derail your FIRE plans. You may outlive your savings and investments if not properly planned out and having retired early your entitlements to CPP and OAS could be significantly less due to lack of contributions in your working years. If you retire in your late 40s or 50s, almost everyone you know will be still working full time, busy with their families, etc. Early retirement could or could not be very isolating. Employment earnings generally increase over one's career so someone who FIREs at say 45 is missing the years when they'd be making the most income. In Part 3 tomorrow, if the Cons have not deterred you, I will detail HOW would one execute on a FIRE strategy. #earlyretirement #FIREmovement #financialliteracy

#RetirementPlanningSeries3 Why is FIRE so hot these days? FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is the talk of the town lately. It's become a popular trend, with people often asking each other about their FIRE number. Let’s dive deeper into what FIRE is and why it’s gaining so much momentum. FIRE is a mindset, a movement, and for many, a financial strategy. It’s about saving aggressively, investing wisely, and reaching financial independence long before the typical retirement age. Why is FIRE gaining momentum? a. Autonomy: You take control of your time and future. b. Flexibility: Work on your terms, whether that means quitting your job early or simply cutting back on hours. c. Empowerment: Achieving FIRE isn’t just about money; it’s about gaining the freedom to live life your way. But here’s the catch: whether pursuing FIRE or traditional retirement, it requires discipline and a clear vision of what financial independence looks like for you. It’s not just about retiring early; it’s about creating a lifestyle where you can make choices based on what matters most to you. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether you’re pursuing FIRE or traditional retirement, seeking expert advice is key to developing a plan that aligns with your goals, lifestyle, and values. #RetirementPlanning #FinancialSecurity #InvestSmart #StartOver Hey everyone! I really need some guidance here. I'm 46 years old, starting from scratch since I have no savings or retirement plans in place. Here’s a bit of context: I spent 20 years working abroad, saved up a decent sum, and then returned to my home country, which unfortunately faced an economic crash that wiped out all my savings. 😞 Now, I’m back with a wife and child to support, and while I’m grateful to have a job, I’m feeling a bit lost. I can only set aside about $200 to $300 a month. I’m wondering, where do I even begin? Is it possible to invest this amount in something secure, like an international company or a retirement fund? **Here are some pain points I’m facing:** 💔 **Economic Instability:** The unpredictable economy in my country makes planning for the future daunting. 🥵 **Lack of Retirement Solutions:** My home country doesn’t offer decent retirement plans, leaving me feeling exposed. 🔍 **Lack o...
