Today, Direct Digital Holdings released their newest whitepaper, Cracking the Code: How Multicultural & Gen Z Reshape Mainstream Marketing. In collaboration with Horowitz Research, this study shows the influence that multicultural and diverse communities have on the brand choices of mainstream consumers – specifically Gen Z. The findings show that 81 percent of Gen Zers, the most diverse generation in history, say that multicultural and diverse consumers have a big impact on their brand choices. Exploring Gen Z: 7 Key Insights about the values of a generation. Working on communication on climate issues and social change, I recently revisited the 2021 "Human Algorithm" study by Archrival on Gen Z values. Despite being a few years old, its findings remain relevant today. Here are my key takeaways: 1. Peer Influence Over Algorithms: Gen Z values peer recommendations over sophisticated algorithms when it comes to taste and beliefs. 2. Political Engagement: This generation seeks brands that help them understand and harness their political power. They urge brands to shift focus from major elections to critical issues like diversity, inclusion, and climate change. 3. Local Focus: Gen Z wants brands to engage more in local politics, encouraging voter registration and participation in local elections to drive community impact before going national or global. 4. Accountability: Gen Z acts as political watchdogs, ready to hold brands accountable for their political stances and actions post-election. 5. Influencer Trust: Traditional influencers are losing ground. Gen Z prefers trustworthy, knowledgeable, and informed figures over those with large followings. 6. Corporate Responsibility: A significant social media presence now demands responsibility. Gen Z expects corporations, brands, influencers, and celebrities to contribute positively to society. 7. Human Connection: Brands need to be real, transparent and engaged. Trust must be earned through consistent, genuine actions.
