I didn’t have any mentors. Vineeta's recent post got me thinking about how having a mentor could've made such a difference in my own journey. You know, having someone to bounce ideas off, get advice from, and just guide you through the ups and downs of work and life – that's something I definitely missed out on.😊 Especially when it came to those big decisions or figuring out who to bring onto the team. Since then, mentors have transformed how I approach business, leading to a successful acquisition and the scaling of two more ventures. Mentorship isn’t complicated or formal—it’s about finding someone ahead of you in an area you want to grow. Here’s how you can find the right mentor, even if you feel like you don’t have much to offer: 1️⃣ Leverage curiosity, not just your network. When I started, I didn’t have many connections. But by asking thoughtful, specific questions to people I admired, I built relationships. Curiosity and a desire to learn can open doors. 2️⃣ Be clear about your goals. You don’t need everything figured out, but mentors are more likely to help if you’re clear on your challenges and growth areas. Be upfront about why you’re seeking guidance. 3️⃣ Show commitment. Behind every successful entrepreneur, there’s often a mentor who played a pivotal role in their journey. I can’t emphasize enough how impactful mentorship has been in my own entrepreneurial path. From navigating tricky decisions to gaining fresh perspectives on complex problems, mentors have been my guiding light. In the early stages of my journey, I had the fortune of working with a mentor who once told me, “𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺; 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀.” This advice fundamentally shifted how I approached both challenges and opportunities. It taught me that success is not about having all the answers but about asking the right questions and continuously learning. Mentors bring more than just advice—they bring perspective. They’ve walked the path, faced their own setbacks, and often see blind spots that we, as entrepreneurs, might miss. Their insights can be the difference between a costly mistake and a well-informed pivot. Besides doing consulting for companies, I do #mentorship for my younger colleagues. I never planned to do this until I started getting requests from them. In fact, I never thought that guidance, support, and mentorship were so valuable because I didn't have them when I started my career path 15 years ago. When I tried to apply for mentorship, being a young entrepreneur in my early 20s, I faced a problem: finding a mentor who shared my values and could respect my way of doing things was tough. What I was doing seemed pointless to them. They treated me like a kid who was just playing and not doing "serious business." Today we know many great examples of social entrepreneurship, teal organizations, and B-corps that focus not only on profits. But back then, these were not seen as common sense yet. The same happened when I tried to get advice from my elder colleagues in marketing. I saw that they were focusing too much on selling more stuff and were looking at me as if I was a weird hippy they had no idea what to do with. When I first became a mentor myself in 2018, I discovered that mentorship is not only about sharing knowledge and experience but also about encouraging and empowering mentees to be the best version of themselves. This is only possible when you look at someone without judgment but with attention, curiosity, and sincere interest in who they are and why they do what they do. I firmly believe that growth happens when the mentor doesn't impose their point of view but creates a safe space for the mentee's transformation. So that's why I try to offer my mentees what I never had: - Shared values and solid ethical principles, - Respect for their personality and their way of doing things, - Admission that I'm also learning from them. It may seem that I'm too soft with my mentees, but in most cases, it is more efficient to slow down and do less instead of trying to run faster, which only leads to frustration and burnout. This lesson shifted my perspective on personal growth: Choosing a mentor/coach isn’t just about their knowledge and certainly not about their wealth. It’s about the way you feel in their presence and the possibilities they open up for you. Its about how they treat you. For years, I’ve spent a substantial part of my earnings to being coached. I believe deeply in this process. While it isn’t essential, it undoubtedly accelerates our dreams and empowers us. You need to feel inspired, energised, and motivated to take action, while also feeling calm and secure. Your mentor should make you feel understood, seen, and remind you of your inner strength. 2. It’s not only about the mentor’s knowledge. What truly matters is how their words and energy awaken your own wisdom. Improvement doesn’t come from endlessly consuming content; it comes when something resonates deeply, switching on a light within us. That inner glow makes us feel powerful, insightful, and incredibly capable. 3. Structures and strategies are important, but they must complement mindset and energy. I’m no longer interested in mentors who promise foolproof strategies and guaranteed results. I seek those who are genuine and joyful, who balance scaling their business with living fully. These mentors understand the interplay between inner work and practical strategies, allowing their energy to sustain them while they take time to enjoy life.
