A recent EFI Foundation study focused on #hydrogenhubs validates what we know from experience: energy projects that want to succeed must engage with local communities early, ensure residents are educated about why projects are essential, and promote benefits that address real community concerns and needs. Read more from DDC SVP Katie Wright about why, in the current political environment, community engagement will make or break individual projects and the #energytransition as a whole. #stakeholderengagement #publicaffairs

Over the past few months, we’ve been deeply engaged in the regional sustainable energy conversation and this commitment will continue throughout the year. While we do want to focus on private sector impact, we cannot turn a blind eye on community involvement. At the community level, this means creating sustainable projects that allows involvement for all, job creation and economic growth, community business development and economic security for future generations. #AnsaMcAlGroup #AnsaMcAL #AnsaMcALLeadership #SustainableEnergy #greenenergy

Our clients are often unsure when is the best time to start engaging with communities – especially around sensitive issues or proposals. They know that the community's trust and acceptance (or social licence) can significantly influence their long-term success and sustainability. We always recommend speaking to communities as early as possible, ideally before a preferred solution has started to take shape. This ensures a detailed understanding of community expectations and needs, which helps inform future project and communication strategies. This is not without risk and requires meticulous planning. We share our recommendations below. We used this philosophy on one of our recent projects, where we engaged a regional community to understand expectations and aspirations in preparation for a major transition - to read more https://bit.ly/3XVK3hl. Why Community Engagement is the Missing Piece in the UK’s Race to 2030 Decarbonisation Targets. A recent report from the think tank IPPR issues a stark warning about the UK's progress towards decarbonising the national grid. It highlights lagging domestic manufacturing facilities as a major barrier. "At the current pace of installation, the UK will miss its 2030 offshore wind target by a generation. The think tank suggests the UK needs to triple its installation rate of offshore wind farms to stay on track." However, what good is increasing manufacturing if we lack the necessary permissions and endorsements to build them? Engaging local communities early and effectively is crucial to overcoming complex challenges. Commonly people are in support of the concept but proclaim “not in my backyard” (coined NIMBYism). At INFLUENCE AT WORK (UK), Olivia Pattison and I collaborate with clients who understand that community engagement requires early consideration and a human-centric approach. Some key learnings so far: 📢 Focusing on the vocal minority can be tempting but they are rarely swayed. Instead, put your energy towards the 'moveable middle'. 🤝 Trust is at the heart of effective community engagement—hard won, easily broken. Transparency and collaboration are useful in building a trusting relationship. 🦸🏻♀️ The messenger is increasingly becoming the message. Big energy companies are not always the best messengers for engaging tight-knit communities. Forge strong partnerships with local heroes.
