Nearly six years ago I left what was, at the time, my dream job. Through much prayer, I was led to and given the opportunity to join the commercial construction/landscape industry. I had met with the owner of the company and it was clear it was where I belonged, but to be “open and honest”, as we like to say around the office, it was anything but easy and smooth. The first year was one of the most challenging of my career, implementing systems and bringing structure to the operations of a quickly growing outfit that was continuously setting yearly revenue records. What I did not anticipate was the growing need for a culture reset and the challenges that would follow. A hard line was drawn to implement core values and make every decision and action according to those values no matter what. Throwing a curveball into this already difficult task of building a culture was instability within the commercial construction industry that led to unforseen rises in costs and losses. Challenges came and morale struggled, leading to tough decisions and long hours, weeks and, honestly, months of evaluating what our mission was and attempting to answer questions like, “what is our vision? Who are we at our core?” There were many times I had to shut my office door and pray we were making the right moves. That the culture we were trying to build, while simultaneously navigating industry challenges, was actually possible and questioning it’s impact on our long term vision and success. Each time I came back to the same conclusion: trust and uphold the values, prioritize those who are committed, the rest will follow. Over the past 2 years I’ve watched our company restructure and buy into a vision that led to bringing on extremely talented professionals and leaders that not only believed in our values, but lived them on a daily basis in and out of work. Experience has its place, but you simply can’t replace a good work ethic and a positive attitude; it’s infectious. Recruiting and open positions quickly turned into referrals and a waitlist to come on-board. Our team has a diverse group of experience ranging from healthcare, oil & gas, education, etc., but we all share one set of values: integrity at our core, loyalty to those we serve and leadership in all we do. It’s been a difficult journey, and in many ways, the exciting part is we’re just getting started. We’re not perfect, but I do know this: we will always aim to do what’s right by our customers and employees. I’m beyond blessed and grateful that I get to work with a team of individuals that I consider friends. I would put up us against anyone and it’s an honor for me to be a part of this story. Our owners have empowered and trusted us to get where we are, now the mission is to go and execute. I’m proud to say I found a home at Earthtones Landscaping, it’s not just a job, it’s a passion, and I thank God every day I get to share it with an incredible team.

😰 50% of young people state that lack of work experience is their biggest barrier to finding work*. If you don’t know someone on the inside, like a parent or mentor, it can be especially hard to gain access to a company. And if you don’t have access to experience, how do you prove your experience to land more experience? 🤯 We want to help change all this, and our company visits are a great first step. By throwing open their workplaces' doors, our brilliant corporate partners are giving our trainees from The Spear Programme their (often first) experience of the working world: demystifying the workplace, and offering the opportunity to practise presenting and networking in a real-life professional environment.
