A friend of mine recently left the organization after working for them for 12 years. He received many pats on the back and words of encouragement. Yet other, younger employees were given preference for promotion. That didn't just happen once or twice. It happened all the time. He loved working for them, but their attitude ruined all his passion and enthusiasm. That's pretty much the definition of a toxic work environment. The day he quit, the company offered him a promotion. He politely thanked them and declined the offer. In the meantime, he has received 2 hiring offers elsewhere. He will decide this week which one to accept. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒕. Credits: Delia #humanresources #careers #jobsearch #jobseekers #BestJobStrategy

Can anyone help explain this to me? I recently had a conversation with someone who came to me for help. Her career history was REALLY jumpy and she couldn't seem to hold on to a job for more than 18 months. After a conversation, I discovered that she was actually good in her job, but she hated the work she did (she's in Sales). Seemed that she needed work on her Career Strategy to pivot somewhere more aligned to her stage in life. When she realised how much work was ahead to fix it, she said... "You know what? I think I'll just buy some Crystals and hire a Fengshui master to change the energy in my house..." And walked off! I wished her well, but couldn't understand what happened... Anybody wants to hazard a guess as to what really happened? #careerağility #jobsearch #job #jobhunting #cvwriting #cv #careers #careercoaching I

Within hours of starting my “exciting dream job” I knew that I had made the wrong move. OUCH. It’s been more than 10 years, but I always remember the date of that first day, today, August 12th, when I see it on my calendar. At first the anniversary was painful and filled with shame. How could I - someone who had spent a career immersed in recruitment, hiring, job hunting, etc. - make that kind of error in judgement? Now, I have deep compassion for my younger self. Back then, I wanted change so badly that I didn’t want to see the red flags. I allowed myself to be flattered. I ignored my gut. Now, I’m grateful for the insights I gained through that experience - about the workplace, job hunting, and about myself. In working with clients who are in the interview process I urge them not to be shy about asking deeper questions to help make sure they are set up for success. Here are just a few: ❓What is the annual budget for this effort, and what is the size of the team? ❔What are the biggest challenges you and the team are facing right now? ❓How would you describe the overall corporate support for this function, and where does the department fall in the organizational structure? ❔Is this a new role, and if not, why did the last person leave? Where did they move to? (Internal or external)? ❓What’s the average tenure of people on this team? Once you have these answers, ask yourself “Do these people and this environment feel comfortable?” Be alert to your physical reactions. Even in a virtual interview, if something feels off, it probably is. Most of all, if you don’t like the reaction you get to a question, that is a red flag! I know it’s a difficult market out there, folks. But don’t let your eagerness for a new job blind you.. New isn’t always better. Bigger and shinier doesn’t guarantee fit. Change isn’t always a good thing - it matters what kind of change you are making. Use caution and trust your instincts - and I’m right here if you want a second opinion! Before accepting a job offer: (Do this to avoid working in a toxic workplace) 1. Click 'Search' on LinkedIn. 2. Find the company you interviewed at. 3. Press the 'people' button and filter it down. 4. Filter by 'location', and 'what they do' specifically. 5. Now, look for people who left the company recently. 6. To do so, click "all filters" and select 'past employees.' Send them this message: "Hi, I noticed you previously worked for company X. I'm considering signing an offer there................Would you be willing to share your previous experience there with me?" Pro tip: Target people who worked in your new role. Remember, companies do their research on you... make sure you research them back.🙂 #officeculture #corporatelife #noncorporatelife #pharmacylife #company #job
