A recent poll from Pivotal Ventures revealed 82% of voters believe policymakers should increase investments in caregiving and supports for caregivers. The National Alliance for Caregiving couldn't agree more! CaringBridge, a no-cost, nonprofit health communication platform that surrounds #familycaregivers with support while they care for a loved one on a #healthjourney, shares a new report highlighting findings from a recent caregiver survey to family caregivers using CaringBridge. #Caregiving is Challenging Over 60% of caregivers reported caregiving is stressful or very stressful. Additionally, over 30% of caregivers report heavy or a large financial strain associated with caregiving. 36% of caregivers report that they feel alone, and 60% reported feeling “left out”. #CaringBridge is Helping The survey reported the differences between new CaringBridge users who joined less than 3 months ago and those users of 6 months or more. A 4x improvement between the two groups was noted when “strongly disagreeing” with the statement “I feel alone”. Additionally, 2x more reported “caregiving gives them a sense of purpose” at 6 or more months. #CaringBridge Provides Helpful Tools to Feel Less Alone It was reported that CaringBridge provides an easy, efficient way to communicate with family and friends. Others shared it creates a sense of community and support, and CaringBridge helped them feel less isolated. One respondent shared, “It brought our community of friends and family to support us in the specific ways we need help. We are surprised and grateful to know that we have so many people who are there for us.” Caregiver overwhelm leads to #isolation and #loneliness. 🌟 Enhancing Support for Caregivers🌟 In our Double-Duty Caregiver research, the double-duty caregivers commented on how difficult it was for them to navigate the health and community care system https://lnkd.in/gz8EYfhm. Now in their recent research, "Healthcare system navigation difficulties among informal caregivers of older adults: a logistic regression analysis of social capital, caregiving support and utilization factors" Canadian Researchers, Boah Kim, Andrew Wister, Barbara Mitchell, Lun Li, and Laura Kadowaki provide key recommendations to help caregivers navigate complex health and community systems: 1. Implement Coordinated Health Policies: We need health policies that specifically address the needs of people who need care and their caregivers, creating a more integrated and user-friendly healthcare system. 2. Increase Awareness and Training: Raising awareness among healthcare professionals about available services and providing training on effective communication can bridge the information gap and reduce miscommunications. (The Caregiver-Centered Care Education is available free online www.caregivercare.ca) 3. Strengthen Social Networks: Fostering connections among caregivers and community resources can alleviate burdens and enhance support systems, empowering them to provide better care. 4. Improve Access to Resources: Offering easy access to information, tools, and resources can significantly aid caregivers in navigating the healthcare landscape. Online platforms and community workshops can be invaluable. 5. Recognize and Support Contributions: Establishing programs that acknowledge the hard work of caregivers and provide support—such as respite care, counseling, and financial assistance—can help reduce stress and improve well-being. 6. Commit to Ongoing Research: Continuous research to identify barriers and facilitators in the caregiving experience is essential. This data will inform future policies and programs aimed at enhancing support. By implementing these strategies, we can create a more supportive environment for those who dedicate their time and energy to caring for older adults. Having participated in a grant many years ago that focused on centralizing services for discharged hospital patients through the Area Agency on Aging Network, I know the power of these initiatives. They are very labor intensive and that's probably why it has been much simpler to just provide either one service or another to caregivers who would benefit more from an integrated approach. What we need is a national strategy and standardization of effort. We need engagement of the employment sector. This could be done with minimal resource expenditure if it is organized effectively. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that many coordination efforts are not sustained over time. The emphasis should be on continuity once the grant support has been expended.
