47% of participants in this study say they do not know there are career paths in the mining industry outside of doing the actual mining. Mining jobs aren’t just Truck Drivers, Shot firers, Engineers, Tradespersons. They are also Accountants, Business Analysts, Emergency Services, Environment & Community, Human Resources, Safety, Cleaners, Logistics, Information Technology, Training, Learning & Development, Security and so many more careers. These diverse roles highlight the breadth of opportunities available in the mining industry that need to be made aware of to generations entering the workforce.
Gen Z Perceptions of Mining and Labour Shortages 51% of young Queenslanders say they don't discuss mining careers with anyone, despite Queensland being the second-largest mining state in Australia. In the graph pictured below the data was compiled across all states, where you can see who is speaking to "Gen Z" about mining careers and interestingly it is Parents, Teachers, and Friends that are doing it the most. As a major industry, it's well-known that labour shortages are currently affecting mining and are likely to continue long into the future. This is where the next generation of Australians, specifically "GEN-Z," is needed to fill this gap. In 2022 a survey was undertaken by 1031 young Australians aged between 15 to 24 Nationwide providing insights into what the future of mining means to these young Australians and their exposure to the industry.
