For the first 10 years of running my agency, I saw myself as an SEO consultant who happened to run a business. Looking back, I realise I was so focused on the technical side of things that I neglected the bigger picture. It wasn't until a pivotal moment during a course at Cranfield University that I had a wake-up call. My coach challenged me to think about the sustainability of my business and helped me shift my perspective. I learned to prioritise: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Making tough decisions to cut costs and ensure profitability. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺: Empowering my team to take ownership and deliver exceptional results. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Thinking beyond immediate wins to create a sustainable future for my business. That shift from SEO consultant to business leader has been crucial to our growth at Re:signal. It's allowed me to focus on the things that truly matter: building a great company, serving our clients, and making a positive impact. What was your wake up call, which led you to switch things up?

Great insight Kevin Gibbons. In my agency days it was the involvement of PE coming into the business. Like you, we were a team of subject matter experts who happened to create a scaling business with high potential out of expertise. PE brought rapid maturity to us. They helped us provide structure, improve our knowledge, and help us to do things more effectively, efficiently, with purpose and, frankly, much, much better! We went from being plucky to being focused and structured in our growth and development in a short space of time. It was simultaneously the most horrible and the most beneficial period of my agency career!

A near death experienced shaked me to my very core and revealed the person I needed to be. Had to give up a lot of old behaviours and thinking that wasn’t serving me for who o realised I wanted to become.

I think I had a number of small wake-up calls each week but I didn't allow myself to wish for 'big dreams'. My turning point was when I realised that I have a great job and, a good salary but I haven't fulfilled. I didn't have peace, so I started to look at how I could get it.

Great reflection Kevin. For me, sometimes the power of BGP is in challenging leaders and providing them with headspace to think about the business in the round, rather than constantly having to address "what's on fire today?".

A pivotal moment for me Kevin Gibbons was when my 2nd child was born in a poor condition, it made me reflect what I was doing in my business and the role I played. It certainly helped me shift towards an intent to be more purposeful, brave and assertive, the result of that is I worked less in the business and more on driving the business forward.
