I am excited to share the premier study of my doctoral research at the University of Iceland, under the supervision of Dr. David Cook and Dr. Brynhildur Davidsdottir, which has been published in the journal Ecosystem Services (link below). https://lnkd.in/ed7_N2Jv This study conducts a systematic literature review to investigate the vast multi-century auroral literature to identify the functions of the aurora in geophysical, biophysical and socio-ecological systems, and uncover the various benefits/disbenefits that are provisioned by the phenomenon. A total of 2,900 publications concerning the aurora were sourced from three scientific databases (ScienceDirect, Scopus and Google Scholar), 1,054 articles were advanced to the synthesis and analysis stage, and 525 of the most illustrative examples were retained for the purposes of the review. A total of 14 auroral ecosystem services (ES) are identified: provisioning (4), regulation and maintenance (1) and cultural (9). In addition, 9 ecosystem disservices (EDS) are also identified and classified: provisioning (4), regulation and maintenance (3) and cultural (2). The aurora is found to function in geophysical, biophysical and socio-ecological systems in a variety of ways. A novel extension of the ES concept is introduced as “exosystem services” (EXS), accounting for the aurora as an overlap between flows into ecosystems from the space environment, mirroring the geosystem services (GS) concept and its flows into ecosystems from the subsurface environment. Auroral ES in management and decision-making is discussed, and multiple opportunities for additional research are explored.

It is wonderful to have been able to attend this year's Australian Academy of Science's (AAS) National Committees for Science meeting in my capacity as Chair of the National Committee (NC) for Geographical Sciences. Held in Canberra's amazing Shine Dome, the meeting brought together Chairs of 18 NCs (plus the Co-Chairs of Future Earth Australia) for briefings and discussions on: AAS International Programs; the ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia-Pacific (including the new Pacific Academy of Sciences); Educational support for schools; AAS Fellowships (noting that there are no Geography Fellows amongst the in the current contingent of 616 Fellows!); EMCR Forum; Awards; Engagement; AAS role in science policy and science advice; and the current Strategic Examination of Australia’s R&D sector (SERD). In discussions the 18 National Chairs were asked to consider some very interesting challenges including: · How will your discipline contribute to Australia by 2035? · What areas of your discipline are seeing greatest demand? · In your discipline, how reliant is Australian on collaboration and infrastructure from other countries? · How will international science engagement in your discipline change over the next 10 years? · What research infrastructure does your discipline need in the next decade? · What opportunities are there for disciplines to build stringer connections with the ISC and Asia-Pacific regions? A great meeting. #geography #science #research

Developing a sensory methodology in migration studies "For the 2025 edition of the IMISCOE PhD school, we aim at training PhD candidates and early career researchers affiliated at institutions around the world to develop visual and sensory methodologies in migration research. We use the term “methodology” as we believe that visual and sensory projects ought to be embedded in a broader research project. Concretely, that means that participants will be encouraged to critically assess the theoretical, empirical, and ethical implications of their methodological choices." Together with Stefano Piemontese we will be leading the working group "Reimagining Knowledge Production Through Collaborative and Multimodal Approaches". Hi everyone! Early-career researcher? Interested in visual and sensory methodologies? Check this out 🙂 The Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) at the University of Lisbon, in cooperation with the Critical Heritage Studies Hub at Jagiellonian University, will host the upcoming IMISCOE PhD School next August 2025. The #IMISCOE network is the largest network of migration scholars in Europe. The last years, IGOT and the Critical Heritage Hub’s members have developed an academic and pedagogical offer linked to visual and sensory methodology, using collaborative multimodal methods, mental maps, photography and filmmaking, all of them tapped on during this PhD School. International trainers will also join the week to support the participants in developing sound PhD projects using a sensory methodology. Deadline for applications is 20 December 2024. Spread the word! https://lnkd.in/dnR3YTQz

CALL FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS: FAPESP Young Investigator Grant on South Atlantic Ocean and Antarctic Sciences The FAPESP Program for the South Atlantic Ocean and Antarctic sciences (PROASA) aims to contribute to the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge through scientific, technological, and innovative approaches in two interconnected yet still little-known planetary compartments (the South Atlantic Ocean and Antarctica). These compartments modulate processes that positively and negatively influence the potential for sustainable development in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and the world. Therefore, PROASA considers initiatives focused on coastal and marine environments in the South Atlantic, under and beyond national jurisdiction, and on Antarctica, which includes the Antarctic continent and the Southern Ocean (or Antarctic Ocean). The PROASA aims to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and its application to confront planetary crises and promote sustainable development. With this Call for Proposals, the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP – wants to bring in up to five researchers who are early in their careers and excel in their specific fields of knowledge. Proposals will be received under FAPESP's Young Investigator Grant support opportunity, aimed at establishing new scientific leadership in the state, only through the SAGe system. This Call is open for proposals from researchers working abroad (Brazilian or not) who wish to start a research career at a research institution located in the State of São Paulo. It seeks to stimulate the creation of opportunities, under internationally competitive conditions, for young researchers with exceptional research backgrounds. Proponents must demonstrate achievements after their doctorate research that indicate leadership capacity and great potential for developing new research groups. A clear international insertion is important, along with an impact on the ongoing research at São Paulo State. Priority is given to topics not yet covered by researchers in the state or that complement themes already being explored.
