The need for a more sustainable methodology and innovative way to increase the output of food production, in the midst of a increasing population size is becoming more urgent. This initiative is great way to help to alleviate some of the global food issues.

Insights from the Europe North to South: food system challenges and solutions event in Brussels! 🌍 Hosted by the European Environmental Bureau, the event underscored the urgent need for a holistic approach to transform our food system into one that is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Here are some key takeaways: 🌱 Tomaso Ferrando from the University of Antwerp stressed the importance of a systemic and just transition in food governance, echoing Amartya Sen's words "there is no such thing as an apolitical food problem." 🍅 Ecologistas en Acción shed light on the hidden costs of export-oriented agribusinesses in Spain, emphasizing the negative impact on local ecosystems and workers' rights. 🚜 Juchowo Farm showcased a successful model of revitalizing land through sustainable agricultural practices, demonstrating the potential for positive change. 🍽 Public procurement and meal systems emerged as powerful drivers for sustainable food choices, highlighting the role of public-private partnerships in fostering behavioral change. The event underscored promising initiatives and serious challenges in the European food system, emphasizing the need for diverse solutions and constructive dialogue. As Isabel Paliotta fittingly summarized at the end of the event, "One-size-fits-all solutions are destined to fail." The Strategic Dialogue conclusions recognise agri-food, including the food and drink industry, as crucial and strategic, a vital sector at the heart of Europe’s future. 🍽 🌍 In our pursuit for a more sustainable future, it's time for all stakeholders, particularly policymakers, to unlock investments, boost innovation and drive competitiveness for all actors in the agri-food chain.   This Report marks a significant shift from previous top-down approaches, advocating instead for a more collaborative, inclusive and market-driven strategy for agriculture and food. FoodDrinkEurope urges policymakers to give these conclusions serious consideration in shaping a Vision for Agriculture and Food during the first 100 days of the next European Commission. 🎯

Today we hosted the Virtual Conference “EU agrifood policy - Navigating the next mandate”.   Thank you to all who joined us, and to our panellists. Here are the key takeaways from our speakers: 🔸 Gijs Schilthuis from the European Commission: "Agriculture and food policies have become polarising topics in political and societal debates. It is possible to combine agriculture and protection of natural resources. We must work together and strengthen the dialogue between all parties and stakeholders now and for the future policy." 🔸 Stoyan Tchoukanov from the European Economic and Social Committee: "The fair distribution and the fair share of the profit needs to go to the farmers. That’s the key, because otherwise there will be no way to invest." 🔸 Faustine Bas-Defossez from European Environmental Bureau (EEB): "It's a myth that we must choose between protecting farmers or the environment. We must do both. Ecosystem collapse and climate change are the main threats to future food security and farmer livelihoods. To ensure the long-term viability of EU agriculture strong environmental laws are essential to support farmers in socially and environmentally just agri-food transition." 🔸 Harriet Bradley from Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP): "Adopting sustainable, regenerative agriculture systems is shown to help farmers’ resilience to climate change and support food security. But upfront costs and lack of knowledge are significant barriers to changing farming systems. EU policies and especially the CAP therefore need to put much more focus on alleviating these barriers and ultimately providing support for provision of public goods." 🔸 Emma Calvert from BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation: "The science hasn’t changed since 2019. We, as consumers, citizens and farmers, need this just transition as much as ever for our environment, for our biodiversity and for food security." 🔸 Angelo Di Mambro from Euractiv: "The next cycle will be an interesting converging period. Among all the important meetings and events out there, this one stands out to me. 👇 Talk about and solutions for more sustainable even regenerative agricultural and food systems have been persistent in the past few years. And it is of the essence to now listen to the young thinkers and doers, the emerging leaders who will drive food systems transformation and contribute to food security, sustainability and regeneration in the crucial decades to come. #nextgeneration, what are your recommendations? ⁉ I cannot wait to hear them. And I am also curious about your backgrounds and experiences, your solutions and models for making agricultural livelihoods more economically rewarding as well. While the promised EU Framework for "Sustainable Food Systems" was unexpectedly being thrown away into the Green bin... the Agricultural & Rural Convention (ARC), @Kollektiv von Morgen, and Arbeitsgemeinschaft bäuerliche Landwirtschaft worked with agri-food-rural actors across governance levels.... we believed in this promise! We wanted to envisage a future-proof and integrated vision for sustainable food systems. We found out that the practices and networks exist and are ready, but they are neglected and trivialised by business-as-usual policies, or even worse. 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗘𝗥𝗕𝗦) 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 Multiple stakeholders of the European Beef Industry are meeting for two days this week in Poznan, Poland, to discuss the status of reducing GHG emissions, exchange ideas, and discuss possible collaborations. The theme of the event this year is “𝗚𝗛𝗚 - 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿”. OSI colleagues participated, representing national platforms of the ERBS and shared their input on the following topics:   👉 @Adrian Piotrowski (Managing Director OSI Poland Foodworks) provided a keynote address on the topic “Poland perspective: the beef sector and the focus on GHG action” 👉 @Lisbeth Hernandez (Sustainability Officer Europe) gave the current status of Germany during the topic “Around Europe – adapting action on GHG to the local context” 👉 @Chloe McKee (Sustainability and Agriculture Manager UK) gave an insightful speech on “The power of collaboration in accelerating progress” mentioning the importance of all beef companies working together and that being the key to our success 👉 @Grace Hester (Senior Manager Sustainability UK) moderated the discussion “Financing the GHG transition” and interviewed Michal Siwek from BNP Paribas. A key takeaway was that businesses need to start now to ensure it does not impact businesses’ P&L in the future
