As someone who started here straight out of college, I entered the corporate world of Finance and Investment Banking with limited awareness of its complexities and challenges. The past 2 years have been transformative, offering me invaluable experiences, skills, and relationships. While it is bittersweet to part ways with such a pivotal part of my life, I am excited about the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Throughout my tenure, I had the distinct privilege of working across two exceptional teams, each presenting unique challenges that honed my expertise and expanded my skill set. Managing a range of complex financial products—including Fixed Income, Derivatives, Collateral Management (cash and securities), FX Cash, FX Spot, FX Options and FX Forwards—required a deep understanding of market dynamics, risk management, and regulatory requirements. These experiences significantly refined my technical abilities and strategic thinking. Additionally, my involvement with the Deutsche Bank Sports Committee has been a highlight of my time here. Organizing a diverse array of events—from competitive tournaments to wellness programs—allowed me to blend my passion for sports with leadership and event planning. This role was not just about orchestrating activities but about fostering a sense of community and connection within the organization. Leaving Deutsche Bank is a decision made with much reflection, yet I am invigorated by the prospect of new challenges and opportunities. The knowledge, experiences, and relationships I’ve cultivated here will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation as I embark on this next phase of my career. Wow what a wonderful surprise to be recognized by the NatWest Accelerator programme. I’ve always seen myself as ‘Captain Catastrophe’, caught by the inner critic and bogged down worrying about worst-case scenarios and ruminating on every little thing that could go wrong. Starting a new business has meant stepping into uncertainty and at times, it’s been hard to ignore the critical thoughts. Starting the NatWest Accelerator program could not have come at a better time. It has connected me with a group of wonderful, supportive people; willing to share their experiences and give their time to thrash out ideas. As the ‘mindset master’ what have l learnt….mindset isn’t constant!!! It goes up and down, backwards and forwards and sometimes does a loop-the-loop. Mindset has good and bad days, and it can be hard work. But, what’s important is holding onto a mindset that is firmly anchored in your values. Pause with me to remember September 11th On this day, we pause to remember September 11th and honor the memories of those who perished, those who survived, and the brave souls who ran into the buildings to help others. It was a day that changed our world forever, a moment that forced us to take stock of what matters most—the people we love and the people we lost. One of my fondest memories from my days at NatWest was working at One Exchange Place in Jersey City, where my cubicle had a breathtaking view of lower Manhattan across the river. I remember being in awe of that skyline, never imagining how dramatically it would change on that fateful day in 2001. September 11th brought heartache, but it also brought stories of miracles. Many people who were supposed to be in the World Trade Center that day were saved by seemingly small choices—a missed alarm, a traffic delay, or an unexpected meeting—turning ordinary inconveniences into extraordinary blessings. These stories of survival remind us that life is fragile and unpredictable, and they offer a glimmer of hope in a time of darkness. As we remember, we also honor the first responders and everyday heroes who, without hesitation, ran into danger to save others. Their courage and selflessness continue to inspire us, reminding us of the power of unity in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Today, we reflect on how 9/11 altered the course of history and our lives. But more importantly, we hold tight to the lessons of love, resilience, and the preciousness of life. We will never forget. The tragic death of Leo Lukenas III, a junior investment banker at Bank of America, highlights the extreme work culture in Wall Street firms. The relentless demands, long hours, and high stress faced by junior employees have long been a concern, contributing to severe mental health issues and, in some cases, fatalities. I have seen firsthand the culture of long hours in investment banking (and consulting) with junior associates often hesitant to discuss workloads for fear of appearing incompetent or "weak". Some banks have introduced mental health programs and initiatives like 'protected Saturdays' to ensure downtime, though implementation varies. Additionally, leveraging technology to reduce repetitive tasks can alleviate some pressure on junior staff. A significant cultural shift is essential, where excessive work is no longer a badge of honour but recognised as harmful.
