Leading Edge Materials has submitted an application for a 25-year mining concession for its Norra Kärr rare earth project. Earlier this summer, the company also applied for recognition of the project as a strategic initiative under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, which could accelerate the approval process. However, obtaining the mining concession is just one step; additional requirements before mining can commence include environmental assessments, for example. #criticalminerals #rareearths #mining #miningnews

Kathryn Moore’s pioneering work on switch-on switch-off (SOSO) mining is set to redefine Europe’s approach to mineral extraction. In a recent article, Aarti Mona Sörensen explores how Moore's small-scale, mobile mining solutions offer a flexible, sustainable way to access critical minerals, especially in challenging locations. With the ability to quickly activate and deactivate operations, SOSO mining could help Europe diversify its mineral supply and respond to market fluctuations efficiently. Through the IMP@CT project, Moore and her team have developed containerised, transportable mining equipment that’s low-impact and suitable for community-friendly mining. This innovative model not only supports the energy transition with critical minerals but also opens up new socioeconomic opportunities by integrating renewable energy solutions and offering localised benefits to economically marginalised areas. Moore’s SOSO approach could be a game-changer for sustainable, community-aligned mining in Europe. https://lnkd.in/gCFPnJKv #mininginnovation #sustainablemining #criticalminerals #communityimpact #renewableenergy #soso #theintelligentminer Carly Leonida

Webinar | Draft Eligible Mining Activity Regulation Join EIANZ and NELA webinar for a deep dive into the proposed changes to the Eligible Mining Activity (EMA) Framework in Western Australia. Introduced in 2022 by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS), the Eligible Mining Activity Framework in WA enables certain minimal disturbance and low-impact activities to be automatically authorised without an environmental assessment. DEMIRS has since revised the criteria for an EMA in its draft EMA Regulations, which specify permitted and prohibited activities, conditions and requirements under an EMA Notice and other critical aspects. The draft regulation is currently open for consultation. This webinar, co-hosted by EIANZ and NELA, will delve into the potential impacts of these proposed changes on prospecting and exploration activities within the mining industry. Speakers will provide an overview of the draft EMA Regulations, detail the prescribed conditions, and provide an analysis on the broader industry implications of the proposed regulation amendment. Come along to this insightful session to ensure you stay ahead in the evolving mining regulatory landscape. When: 26 June 2024, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. Cost: Free for EIANZ and NELA Members | $5 for Non-members https://lnkd.in/drJ5qJnh

The American Cove Capital and the national mining company Tau-Ken Samruk will jointly search for rare and rare earth metals at the Akbulak site in the Kostanay region, near Arkalyk. The parties signed the corresponding agreement on April 8, the press service of Samruk-Kazyna reports. It is expected that American investors will create a joint venture together with the subsidiary of Tau-Ken Samruk, Kazgeology. Cove Capital will fully finance exploration until reserves are listed on the balance sheet. Previously, Kazgeology reported that large deposits of rare and rare-earth metals, including yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, thulium, lutetium, and, in addition, tin and zirconium, could be found at the Akbulak site. The total forecast reserves and resources of the site are estimated at 380 thousand tons. At the same time, Kazgeology announced the search for investors for exploration of the field back in 2019. Cove Capital was founded in 2015. It invests in biopharmaceuticals, renewable energy, clean technology and mining. Cove Capital, through KAZ Resources (USA), owns KAZ Critical Minerals. The company's head office is located in the States. In September 2023, Samruk-Kazyna and Cove Capital signed a cooperation agreement on critical raw materials.

Today, the Perth USAsia Centre hosted a fascinating private roundtable discussion on Deep Sea Mining, led by Jo Feldman and Lisa Koch, Partners at Norton Rose Fulbright, with attendees from government, industry and academia. My key takeaways from the discussion: 🌊 On certain parts of the ocean seabed, at depths of 4-5km, there are "nodules" of critical minerals, formed over millions of years. 🏝 The Cook Islands is estimated to have up to 10 billion tonnes of critical mineral nodules in its Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ). ⛴ Technology development continues to accelerate, and the march towards mining the seabed is accelerating. 🏇 Over 30 companies are in the process of shifting from exploration to potential exploitation of the seabed. 🐠 ESG considerations naturally take time to work through to achieve environmental protections, engage communities, and provide due governance on capital investment requests for Boards. 🏄♂️ However, geopolitics waits for no one, and some states are moving faster than others to develop their seabed mining capacity, capability and an integrated processing value chain. MY TAKE: 🔎 WATCHING BRIEF: Even if just a fraction of these nodules is harvested, the additional supply could impact traditional mining markets. Disruptors are likely to have different subsea and harvesting competencies, in addition to processing. https://lnkd.in/gTidD72v L.
