Many founders confuse having a goal for new customers with having a strategy on how to win them. This is actually a PMF (Product-Market Fit) conversation, BUT where your PMF hypothesis is actually the OUTPUT and a business strategy and business model are the input. It covers how you rank and prioritise market opportunities vs your capabilities vs your hypothesis of where your competition/ alternatives are going: - And you need to rebuild this strategy - And several times as you grow. - And when customers x competitors x alternatives x your capabilities change. A caution to SaaS startup founders with $1M ARR... 🚩 Having 1M ARR doesn’t mean you’re ready to scale. Most founders and VCs assume that 1M in revenue means a company is ready to hire more salespeople and invest more in their marketing programs. This stems from the common SaaS benchmark: $1M ARR = Product Market Fit And while I think it’s a good rule of thumb, it comes with a critical condition: 💢 The revenue must come from the SAME customer segment. If your revenue doesn’t meet this condition at 1M ARR, it’s a signal that you DO NOT have product market fit. Instead, what you have is initial traction towards 5 different versions of product market fit. (See Company A in image) And you’re NOT ready to scale. —— Whether you’re a VC or a founder, remember… 👉 Scaling beyond $1M ARR is all about REPEATABILITY in your sales and marketing programs. And these programs are hard to build out — even for a single customer segment. So when you reach $1M ARR, take a good hard look at where your revenue is coming from BEFORE you invest in sales and marketing to get to 3M ARR. 💀 Or you may be scaling your way into failure. #saas #startups #venturecapital #growth
