What a great two days I just had at the Public Utilities Fortnightly Top Innovators 2024 Conference. Such a great experience to hear from utilities that are innovating in #transmission, #distribution, #distributedenergy, #customerengagment and so many other ways. I truly believe there is no industry that is innovating more than the #powersector right now. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄: 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 & 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀: Moeller highlights the dual mission of supporting economic growth while advancing toward zero-carbon targets. For data centers, this balance is crucial as they drive significant new power demands. 𝗡𝗲𝘁-𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗮𝘀: During certain times, especially low-wind and cloudy periods (~70-80 hours every three years), gas-fired generation can fill renewable gaps to maintain reliable power. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗠𝗥𝘀: Small Modular Reactors could be transformative, but Moeller suggests they’re still around 20 years from maturity. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Data centers could invest in gas-fired power for current needs and transition these plants to backup grid support, enhancing resilience over time. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Strengthening ties between electric and gas sectors, including solutions like on-site gas storage, could prevent costly new pipelines and improve grid stability. 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗢: With data centers proposing projects as large as 2.5 GW, equivalent to Indianapolis, MISO faces unprecedented load growth, often with tight timelines. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: Current regulatory structures aim to prevent overbuilds but may now need to adapt for rapid buildouts.
