Hey Microsoft, generic words for product names make for awkward language. When designing the usability of your services, are you thinking of how I can talk about using them in daily language? “I’ll set up a team on Teams,” or “let me loop you in the Loop doc.” Or was it intentional? Maybe I’m old fashioned but I like how Slack became a term that stands for the function the service enables, but doesn’t create ambiguity in context, and doesn’t require capitalization for clarity. I think product and service naming, and how that drives daily language around usage, is part of usability and accessibility…

Zoom’s homepage has a lot going for it. Much of the design and copy choices are worth emulating. One of the aspects I would instruct you to steer clear of? The lack of whitespace in the hero. I think Zoom can get away with this because they are Zoom. They are a category leader, about as entrenched as Microsoft in the space they are in. But from the moment I visited the page, having decided to analyze it, The first thing that struck me was “information overload”. That being said, when you take the time to read the copy and look at the design elements, nothing is necessarily superfluous. It’s quite possible that a downscaling of the visual elements on the right would completely fix this “busy” first impression. Alternatively, shortening the body copy might help with this problem as well. If I have any other note about their hero section, it would be this: where are the capabilities? Again, Zoom’s dominance in their category gives them the luxury of assuming you already know what Zoom does. Don’t emulate that. Looking for more annotations & analysis like this? I've ditched OneNote for Microsoft Loop Here's why: OneNote has been my go-to for meeting notes, organising thoughts and general brainstorming - great for structure. But the syncing and sharing? A headache, no matter the Microsoft tenant I've been in. Microsoft #Loop - I caught wind of Loop in 2022 as this nifty real-time collaboration feature in Teams. Initial impressions? Cool, but underwhelming - couldn't see much of a use case just within Teams chats. Fast forward to the full Loop web app launch, and I'm using it in my daily workflow. What I like - → Solid Formatting & UI/UX. → Task lists and @mentions - I can easily share loop pages → Planner boards now sync with Todo and Loop - Tasks sync across multiple apps. → As a Loom fan, the native video and screen recording features are decent There's lots of early Comparisions between Loop and Notion, it doesn't rival Notion. I'm keen to see where Microsoft takes this product.
