I do not, myself, take up counselling for children. So many times, parents come through referrals and insist that I take up their child’s case instead of our consultant child psychology specialist counselor. My answer is always the same. NO. As we practice, it can get tempting to just take it all up and see yourself as invincible with all skillset. However please remember, working with children requires a different skillset than adults, and without proper training in it, let’s not do harm! Some resources for people who want to get trained in child psychology- 1. We ofcourse have the option of Mphil in Rehabilitation psychology for those who want to work with special kids or in rehabilitation. (It's a compulsory degree if these are your potential work areas). 3. Masters in child psychology options are available and DES Pune University has also started a child psychology masters!!! So proud of them! But what about those who are already in their Masters/have completed Masters, want to work with everyday concerns of children, or in schools and are focused on mainstream children's population?🌻 Well, DIPS has specifically tailor made a course for YOU. As an IITian, I also faced mental health issues. Lately, there has been a lot of attention in the news and on social media regarding the state of mental health among IIT students. It seems that many are solely attributing academic pressure as the primary factor causing these problems. As someone who has experienced being an IIT student and is now a mental health professional, I believe that this theory of academic pressure is an oversimplification of the situation. There are several other interrelated factors that also contribute equally, if not more, to the current state of mental health at IITs. 1. Peer pressure 2. Early childhood experiences (contribute to the foundation of one's personality) 3. Self-esteem issues 4. Family's emotional environment (especially during growing up years) 5. Inter-personal stress (friendships and romantic relationships) 6. Socio-cultural aspects 7. Intrapersonal factors (conflicts within a person's mind) 8. Personal aspirations and expectations (which are also shaped by external surroundings) 9. Need for external validation for one's self-worth 10. Societal hype about IITs and being an IITian 11. Last but not least, the genetics and biological aspects I kindly request all stakeholders to refrain from blaming one single factor, such as academic pressure or a particular institution, for the concerning state of mental health in IITs. Instead, let us examine the issue from multiple perspectives to find comprehensive solutions. If you find this post informative, please consider reposting it or sharing it with your network. Please feel free to express your thoughts and opinions on the matter in the comments section. P.S. May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Check out my publication in the Psi Chi Journal in 2021. https://lnkd.in/eEwGDwnZ Some quotes: "India is a densely populated developing country, a mix of modern cities and rural villages. With over 200 languages and Deities, India has a multitude of cultures. One aspect of the culture remains the same, no matter where in India you go and that is the culture surrounding mental health and the treatment of women. Both are treated poorly and combined is a tragedy." "Just because the Constitution gives men and women equal rights does not mean it is culturally instituted." "In 2004, the Indian Supreme Court ruled that nagging by the wife is grounds for divorce. A local survey was conducted in Tamil Nadu and 56.25% of people supported the ruling " "Externalization of a problem is helpful because then patients don’t blame themselves for their mental health issues. Especially for women, who tend to internalize issues which leads to somatization. An intervention would be to re-frame psychiatrists as “tension” healers"." This paper brings awareness to the complex socio-structural issues, cultural factors, legal policies, and internalized thinking that create this dangerous and terrible living space for women. Give it a read! #psychology #publishedpaper #research
