Daniel Goleman has found "that the most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: They all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence. It’s not that IQ and technical skills are irrelevant. They do matter, but mainly as 'threshold capabilities'; that is, they are the entry-level requirements for executive positions. But my research, along with other recent studies, clearly shows that emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership." The notion of "threshold capabilities" is an important one, in that, demonstrating sufficient technical skills is key (you have to be able comprehend and evaluate the quality of work outputs from those reporting to you), but at a certain level, transitioning from playing the instrument to being the conductor, entails a different suite of skills and core competencies. I don't think the corporate space fully appreciates how vital it is to cultivate talent in leadership roles (e.g., executives) that not only "get" people, but have a fervent desire in doing so. Some high-performing individual contributors need to remain just that, while some "less than stellar" technical performers could end up being the glue (i.e., the heart and soul) that binds an organization.
