Digital transformation is often sold as the ultimate solution, promising to change the game for businesses and guide us into a more efficient future. But there’s a tricky side to this story: many new technologies come with serious ethical concerns. As experts, it’s essential we all look beyond the glossy appeal of AI, data analytics, and automation. If we ignore these challenges, we risk creating problems that could harm individuals and society as a whole. Here are six points worth thinking about: Bias in AI and Automation. AI has great potential, but it’s only effective if the data it learns from is fair. If the data is biased, the systems will reinforce discrimination, often favouring specific groups in hiring or decision-making. We must ask ourselves whether we are unintentionally introducing bias into our solutions. Invasion of Privacy. The drive for data often clashes with people’s right to privacy. Tracking consumer behaviour or monitoring employees can quickly become intrusive. It’s crucial to ensure that our data strategies respect personal privacy and maintain trust. Job Losses through Automation. Automation can boost efficiency, but it can also lead to job losses, particularly in lower-skilled roles. We need to think about the social impact of our recommendations and consider if we’re contributing to growing economic inequality. Accountability in Algorithms. Algorithms make important decisions that affect lives, yet many operate without transparency. We must tackle the issue of accountability when these systems fail. It’s essential to support solutions that provide clear lines of responsibility. Widening the Digital Divide. Not every business can keep up with the rapid changes in digital transformation. Smaller companies and those in less developed areas often lack the resources to compete with larger, tech-savvy firms. We should be mindful of the risk of widening inequality and aim for solutions that include everyone. Data-Driven Manipulation. The power to influence consumer behaviour through data raises ethical questions. Overly personalised marketing can lead to manipulation instead of informed decision-making. We must consider whether our strategies respect people’s autonomy or cross into unethical territory. As transformation experts, we have a duty to act with integrity and awareness. We are dedicated to navigating these challenges alongside our clients, ensuring that our approach to transformation is ethical and fair. The future of digital isn’t just about innovation; it’s about building trust and creating a responsible business environment. I'm very proud to share the product of our year-long research project with CSIRO's Data61. Connecting the dots between #ESG and #ResponsibleAI has been eye-opening and came with a LOT of creative opportunity to tackle a new, exciting, and complex topic. Along with company engagement insights and case studies in the report, we’ve created a #framework to help the investment community assess RAI practices by building on existing #ESGtheory. Rather that reinventing the wheel, we believe that AI already has an interface with key ESG aspects such as governance, cybersecurity, diversity and climate change. Core to this design decision was our belief that responsible AI strategies need to be risk-based and take into account both threats and opportunities. It's worth pointing out that we have grounded the framework in Australia's 8 AI Ethics Principles, offering investors and companies with the tools to operationalise the high level principles. All Boards need to be thinking about AI… and about governance of AI.
AI in the Boardroom – what questions should Directors be asking? AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of daily business operations. Its’ adoption across industries is driving operational efficiency and transforming how companies deliver value and engage with stakeholders. The application of AI needs to be governed and integrated within a company’s corporate governance framework that is understood, applied and supported by the Board and fed down throughout the organisation. Boards should be looking to put AI on the Agenda and consider it as part of the ‘G’ in ESG. Accountability and transparency should be a priority whilst ensuring the strategic alignment of AI with the Company’s goals. The following considerations / questions can help Boards ensure that the use of AI across their business is responsibly implemented, monitored and regulated: • Is the continually evolving regulatory environment being adequately monitored? • Board accountability – does the Board have the right skills and knowledge? Is the application of AI integrated within the governance framework? • Who is responsible for AI within the business? • Impact assessment - what consideration has been given to the use of AI and how this affects employees and other stakeholders? Is there on-going assessment? • Setting of goals – is the use of AI aligned with the core values of the Company? • Audit of AI – how is the use of AI measured? Is the application of AI built into the Company’s risk register? Does the Board / Audit Committee have an active role? Is AI to be reported in the Annual Report? • Ethics Committee – has the Board considered establishing an Ethics Committee to oversee the implementation and on-going use of AI? • Have employees been adequately trained to use AI so as not to put the Company at risk? • Is there compliance with privacy - data protection, GDPR laws and regulations? • How will the on-going use of AI be reviewed at Board level? Based on a global survey on AI by McKinsey & Company earlier this year, AI adoption worldwide has increased dramatically in the past year, but few respondents reported having governance in place to scale AI responsibly. Think of it as the GDPR, but for AI, and it's got everyone on their toes. Why? 'Cause if you're not playing ball, you could be coughing up fines that'll make your wallet weep—up to €35 mil or 7% of your yearly global cash flow. Ouch! 😮 Getting your head around the EU AI Act is like assembling a super team. You need everyone from the Leadership to the Janitor on the ground to pull together. It's all hands on deck to ensure your AI game is tight and right. The board needs to step up and steer this compliance ship. It's on them to decide if they're going all-in with a shiny AI Act compliance plan or if they're aiming higher with an AI ethical risk program. They've gotta be in the know on AI information and make sure the company's AI moves are both cool with the law and on the up and up, ethically speaking. Then you've got the C-suite crowd, the ones drawing up the battle plans. They start with a deep dive to spot the gaps and figure out how to bridge 'em. It's like customizing your own AI compliance toolkit that fits just right with what you do and how you do it. And, they've gotta pick the right champ to lead the charge, someone who knows their AI from their elbow. Managers are where the rubber meets the road. They're the ones making sure the day-to-day ops are in line with the new AI rulebook, keeping things smooth while sticking to the script. It's all about keeping an eye on the AI tech, making sure it doesn't step out of line or get too cheeky. The EU AI Act is changing the game, and it's all about staying ahead of the curve. By getting everyone in sync and keeping an eye out for pitfalls, companies can navigate these new waters like pros. It's not just about dodging fines; it's about being a front-runner in responsible AI, earning trust, and setting the bar high. Let's hit this AI Act head-on, team style.

What a thought provoking morning at #TC2024 talking about #AI and #trust. My notes from across three very different conversations: - focusing on #ethicalAI is tricky - technology tools will not be ethical, organisations that use it and their governance have to be. - #AIregulation goals should include ethics and human rights, but also supporting #digitalsolidarity among countries, and an ecosystem of innovation - including funding, supporting start-ups and allowing them to grow, and favoring an ecosystem vs 'first past the post' AI economy. - because technology is ubiquitous, and driven by multinational corporations, multilateral organisations have a clear role to play. Regulations in the EU and USA, but also regulatory black holes, will have a global impact. - existing regulations are a good starting point, as we regulate the #AIusage rather than the technology (consumer, or banking regulations do not change between online and in-branch banking!). However, we have to be alert where there are strong side-consequences, such as anything involving #PII and #biometrics. This means so far AI regulation has been more judiciary than legislative. - regulations as well as #Boards have an opportunity to focus on regulating risk, and acceptable tisk levels depending on the context and data involved, rather than the technology itself, which will change quickly - it's ok for regulations to be in progress and evolving - even the car industry or ecommerce keep changing. Think of it as a regulatory #sandbox, and ways in which we can learn from mistakes where they happen. - we've had industrial revolutions in the past. What can we learn about making this one #inclusive and #fair while taking the opportunity. With a large majority of businesses intending, and feeling the pressure, to adopt AI, how can we ensure productivity and value gains are shared equally?
