The rail industry is facing a well-documented skills gap, but in East Kilbride, 11 young graduates have successfully completed the QTS Rail Skills Academy programme. Equipping them with crucial qualifications, including the Personal Track Safety (PTS) card, which enables them to work safely in operational rail environments. Led by QTS Group, this programme highlights the importance of targeted, industry-specific training to bridge workforce shortages and create long-term career opportunities. As QTS Training Director Paul Jarvis noted, the academy is about more than technical skills—it's about unlocking potential and fostering pathways into a sector vital to the UK’s future. As rail strives for ambitious goals such as net-zero emissions and digitalisation, these new recruits will play a vital role in shaping its future. Programmes like this one are essential to ensure the sector has a pipeline of talent ready to innovate, adapt, and lead. Initiatives like the QTS Rail Skills Academy also raise broader questions. How can we replicate their success to scale up skills development across the UK? What more can be done to attract young talent into rail? And how do we make similar opportunities more inclusive, ensuring they are accessible to all communities? These graduates are stepping into an era of exciting possibilities for rail. Their journey serves as an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved when investment in people meets a clear vision for the future. The rail industry, with its vital role in sustainable transport and economic growth, depends on initiatives like this to ensure its resilience and progress. According to the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), research on reducing the minimum age of train drivers from 20 to 18 shows that existing training, competence and safety systems could be deployed for younger entrants, obviating the need for new costs or special allowances. RSSB has conducted research on the feasibility of reducing the minimum age of train drivers from 20 to 18. Other European countries already allow people as young as 18 to drive domestic trains, and are reportedly seeing the benefits. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Training Program Hosted by UIC and JR East Completed! 🚃 We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the safety training program hosted by UIC - International union of railways #UICrail and #JREast, held in Tokyo from November 11 to November 15. This program focused on safety and brought together nine participants from Australia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, China, India, South Korea, and Vietnam. The training was designed to deepen understanding through both theoretical lectures and practical experiences, utilizing site visits and hands-on facilities. Our experts delivered lectures on our safety philosophy and human factors. Additionally, Virginie Papillault, Manager of Human and Organizational Factors and Safety Culture at UIC, provided a video lecture. Participants visited various railway-related workplaces, including crew depot, rolling stock maintenance depot and electrical departments, to observe safety practices firsthand. On the final day, participants shared their feedback and received certificates of completion. They expressed that they gained a better understanding of the importance of instilling a safety culture and the significance of human factors. They also appreciated the practical training using simulators, which they felt directly contributed to safety. This training was conducted with the approval of the UIC AP region and funded by the region's budget. We extend our gratitude to all members who supported this training and to all participants. 👷♂️🚂 In just one year, thousands of Sydney Trains maintenance crew and apprentices, supported by teams of contractors worked around the clock to remove over 2,000 high-priority defects and over 35,000 total defects. We know it hasn't been without its challenges for our passengers, and we are grateful for your patience. But we haven’t stopped there. We've now turned our attention to a Train Repair Plan - a major investment in the improvement of our fleet. This maintenance work will include improving technology, communications and operating systems, repairs to carriages, and projects to extend the life of the diesel fleet. Incidents on the rail network are inevitable, but keeping our fleet in top shape is our key priority to reduce delays and cancellations for our passengers. #RailRepairPlan #TrainRepairPlan #TransportforNSW #SydneyTrains
