It takes time to build a podcast audience — and there are very few short cuts. Businesses need to think in terms of building subscriber bases, not per-episode downloads. And yet, the most common "toe-in-the-water" podcasting experiment is a short series; often comprising fewer than 6-8 episodes. Looking at the most common features shared by successful podcasts from finance and professional services firms, I think I see the following: 1. Commitment (this may be selection bias on my part, but I don't think so) 2. One or two named hosts who provide continuity between episodes, and who build a relationship with the audience. Their personalities help reduce the gap between the organisation and the personal 3. A degree of giving the audience what they want — looking at how their episode titles over time I see less "professional formality', more 'friendly chat'. All this being said, I've only ever guested on podcasts, never hosted one. Wouldn't mind a few pointers.

A big key to building a successful podcast is being fully video-led. People are consuming podcasts through video more than ever. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a couple of chairs in a room and going audio-only. But for most of the shows we produce, we’ve found that the audience is usually knocking around on TikTok, Instagram, Youtube and other platforms that are primarily visual. Video isn’t necessarily just about looking fancy either. It opens up more ways to monetise, from product placements and YouTube ad revenue to a whole host of other opportunities. It also: ➡️ Gives you access to more platforms. ➡️ Increases your reach ➡️ Boosts impressions ➡️ And ultimately grows your audience. Without video, creators are putting themselves at a disadvantage. On the other hand, video definitely comes at a cost and raises the bar for entry (that’s where The Fellas Studios comes in!!) That’s why we have to invest heavily in making sure each set and all visuals are on point, because that’s how crucial it is to us.

This genius tip here from James Cridland is a bigger deal than most will realise. Here's why: 1. Android is still the dominant OS in mobile. Particularly in the UK - where it has 54% at last count. That's a half of the country worth of potential new listeners now able to listen to your podcast in Apple Podcasts (which still holds most of the listener currency regardless of what Spotify would like you to believe!) 2. If people are now able to 'install' Apple Podcasts on their Android device, they'll have access to the things everyone is talking about, including reviews (not the comments that Spotify offers) and the awful but still compelling 'charts'. 3. As much as Spotify works for younger audiences, the UX is dreadful for anyone over the age of 40, and your mum just might listen to your podcast (and others) if you can install Apple Podcasts on her Android phone for her.
