🌟𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? 🌟 August is Intersectionality Awareness Month, and at DIVERSIFAIR, we are dedicated to addressing intersectional fairness in the context of AI systems. This month, we want to shed light on what intersectionality is and why it’s a powerful tool for creating a more inclusive world. Intersectionality is a framework for understanding how various aspects of a person’s social and political identities (like race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, etc.) combine to create unique experiences of discrimination and privilege. Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term in 1989 to highlight how Black women face overlapping discrimination from both racism and sexism. 🔎The concept has roots in the work of earlier scholars and activists, such as the Combahee River Collective, who emphasised the interconnected nature of social identities and oppressions. Intersectionality helps us see the full picture of inequality and work towards more inclusive solutions. Where are the Black tech execs? The Latina academics? The Indigenous AI ethicists? The LGBTQ+ startup leaders? The Asian Indian engineers? Their voices are missing in the key talks around AI policy. Shout out to Jorge M. Calderon for recently calling attention to the lack of diversity and inclusion in conversations around AI policy and regulation. While he focused on Latinx/e folks specifically, Jorge recognized other underrepresented groups need a seat at the table too. https://lnkd.in/enZM7ZrZ The published photo with President Biden's meeting ith leaders from Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI exemplifies the lack of diversity in these discussions. As important as their expertise is, the group was overwhelmingly white men. Leaving out these diverse perspectives now is short-sighted when AI will shape our shared future. So it's crucial that diverse communities have a seat at the table to share their insights and help craft balanced policies. As an advocate for equity, I agree diversity and inclusion can't be an afterthought when dealing with transformative technologies like AI. I particularly liked the talks by Bernt Schiele (inherent interpretability for deep learning in computer vision) and Tim Miller (human-centered counterfactual explanations for image classification) https://lnkd.in/e5gAgZ5d Last was the book "Queer Career: Sexuality and Work in Modern America" by Margot Canaday. Canaday provides a compelling look at the last ~100 years of sexuality and work in America, documenting with archival evidence and interviews the evolution of how LGBTQ+ people navigated their careers and drove changes to organizations and society as a whole. The heartbreaking choices people had to make in the past (and many transgender people still have to choose today) between taking low paying, precarious jobs where they could be themselves vs. careers almost necessarily capped by social norms that were nearly impossible to navigate, was sobering. This book shines when connecting different time periods as well as Canaday's stunning, rich examination of the "Lavender Scare" period's bureaucratic machinery and counter-activism. The end of the book engages in a lot of speculation about the roots of current corporate support of the LGBTQ+ community without much evidence, and probably would be stronger without those sections. Still, even the sections covering the last few decades provided fascinating insight into how the tech sector, starting with Lotus and Bell Labs, in a limited way pushed the societal conversation around equal rights forward. Overall this book is necessary reading for those hoping to understand work today and in the past, and the power (and limits) of organizations and individuals to create a more just society. Young people want adults to know that "the world is changing," "we are the future," and "AI is the future." Teen and Young Adult Perspectives on Generative AI 🤖💬 A new report by Common Sense Media, Hopelab, and the Center for Digital Thriving sheds light on how young people ages 14-22 perceive and use generative AI. Here are the key findings: 1️⃣ Half of young people have used generative AI, but only 4% are daily users. Black and Latinx youth are twice as likely as white youth to use it weekly. 2️⃣ Top uses: getting information (53%) and brainstorming ideas (51%). Black and Latinx users are significantly more likely to leverage AI for various activities. 3️⃣ One-third of non-users believe AI wouldn't be helpful. Reasons vary by race, LGBTQ+ identity, and age. 4️⃣ 41% expect both positive and negative personal impacts. LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to anticipate negative effects vs. cisgender/straight peers. 5️⃣ Excitement centers on AI's potential for school, work, creativity, and human advancement. Concerns include job loss, privacy, intellectual property theft, and misinformation. 6️⃣ Teens want adults to know AI is the future, but perspectives range from optimism to apprehension. Some use AI to learn and create, while others worry about cheating, bullying and inappropriate content. 7️⃣ The report underscores the importance of engaging diverse youth voices in shaping the responsible development and use of generative AI. 🗣️ #GenerativeAI #YouthPerspectives #DigitalWellbeing #EdTech #ResponsibleAI

🎉 LGBT Tech is thrilled to share that the org was part of the Expert Group in the second phase of the @Open-Loop US program, focused on Generative AI Risk Management and the NIST Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1). From April-July 2024, the program explored current strategies and challenges in generative AI risk management and how the NIST AI RMF and Generative AI Profile can be utilized to enhance these efforts.
