Stellantis has just announced its Vauxhall plant in Luton will be shutting down, in a big blow to the local economy and the state of manufacturing in the UK. The reason? the weight of government quotas for EVs in combination with slowing demand. For many manufacturers, this confirms their concerns over the unfeasibility of the ZEV mandate. At Manufacturing Digital, we find ourselves agreeing with calls for a more flexible alternative. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/egMADZwF #Manufacturing #EVs

🇬🇧 UK Automotive Manufacturing Round-Up This Week: The UK automotive sector has been dynamic this week, facing leadership changes, plant closures, and evolving policy discussions. 🔹 Leadership Changes at Stellantis • Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares resigned after internal disagreements with the board. • His tenure included the controversial closure of the Luton van-making plant, impacting 1,000+ jobs. 🔹 Plant Closures Across Europe • Stellantis, Ford, Bosch, and others announced workforce reductions and closures, citing high costs, weak demand, and competition from Chinese manufacturers. 🔹 Policy Updates: Petrol & Diesel Ban • The UK government is reconsidering the 2030 ban on new petrol/diesel cars. Hybrids like the Toyota Prius might remain available until 2035. • This could offer manufacturers more flexibility in meeting zero-emission goals. 🔹 Production Trends • UK car production declined for the 8th consecutive month (-15.3% in October YoY). • Electrified vehicle output dropped 32.6%, reflecting industry challenges with the zero-emission vehicle mandate. These developments highlight the sector’s challenges and opportunities as it transitions to a greener future. #UKAutomotive #Sustainability #Innovation #EVs #UKManufacturing #PolicyUpdates #FutureOfMobility

Today we can announce the third of our loan commitments to a #battery joint venture between a Detroit automaker and Korean cell manufacturer. This $7.5 billion LPO loan to StarPlus, the Stellantis-Samsung SDI JV, will support two battery #gigafactories in Kokomo, Indiana and create roughly 3000 jobs at full operations. This investment in Detroit’s #EV transition follows similar commitments to GM and Ford over the past two years, and ensures America will continue to onshore the #manufacturing capabilities it needs to maintain global competitiveness in the 21st Century. #energy #supplychain #automotive #economicdevelopment https://lnkd.in/erEbtcz8

"I told you so!" moment incoming... The UK’s ambitious 22% EV sales target for 2024 is already hitting a wall 🚗 Major players like Stellantis (parent company of Vauxhall) are sounding alarms—and even threatening to pull production from the UK entirely. When policymakers and industry aren’t in sync, this is what happens. It’s not just about setting targets; it’s about ensuring the infrastructure, supply chains, and market readiness align. Time to rethink, recalibrate, and engage more with those on the manufacturing front line. Otherwise, we risk driving jobs, investment, and innovation straight out of the UK. #Electricvehicles #Manufacturing #Policy #Sustainablemobility #AutoIndustry

Years of enterprise and public policy complacency have impacted the capacity of VW to achieve successful cost recovery in a changing technological and market landscape. Its historic product mix and production systems have been bypassed by new EV products and manufacturing systems. Add to the problems at a firm level the EU policy failure on both innovation and most importantly cheap energy security, and energy-and-innovation dependent sectors will face pressures unseen in their lifetimes. Protectionist measures won’t help because the challenge is high energy costs and manufacturing efficiency. Adding costs to buyers doesn’t address these two issues. Increasing costs to buyers compounds the market constraints problems faced by VW, as the Eurozone economies face stiff headwinds. #eu #evs #vw

With rebranding to Vauxhall (for example), this will be an MG style venture. a very smart move for Stellantis as a company. Vauxhall Motors Ltd the only problem of course would be the inevitable damage that this will do to the European automotive industry and the political issues this will cause across the block. this is precisely the reason the US is bringing additional taxes on Chinese exports and especially against their incredibly powerful EV industry. #us_tarrifs #eu_tarrifs #geopolitics
