Lesson in #leadership and on giving space . Sourav Ganguly talking about Virender Sehwag, the maverick cricketer.
And the #lesson he learnt from this carefree, talented team member who mostly followed his free spirit and not as per the captain's script :)
An interesting watch. Given it plays out in so many organisations - Corporate or Entrepreneurship where many leaders think My way is best because I am the boss and I know best.
And anyone who does follow that is branded as a rebel, or seen as inconvenient to handle!

"Such a lesson for me in captaincy": Sourav Ganguly
I had a similar moment in my career - though without the excitement of winning a cricket match against a tall target!
I had a very strong performer on my team. In a 1:1 conversation before the promotion cycle, I started speaking about a few things they should focus on getting promoted. They patiently listened to me and said, "Rahul, I am NOT looking to get promoted in this cycle!"
I was stunned! I could not imagine that someone would say they don't want to get promoted!
They went further, "I have always wanted a big Indian wedding. My priority over the next 3 months is to plan my dream wedding. Please tell me what I need to do to just meet your expectations".
That was the day about 9 years ago I learnt that everyone has their own plans - a manager should not impose on their team what they think is good for the team members.
Offer suggestions but leave the decisions to them. Without being upset or hurt about it.
Everyone plays the game differently - and that is OK!
I have had a rich - long, demanding but still rich - learning journey over the 18+ years I have been a People Manager.
A farewell card as I transitioned into my new role 2 weeks ago said, "There are managers who help you do your job better and ensure to play to your strengths and then there are leaders who help inspire and help find true potential in everyone they touch. You clearly fall in the latter category."
Everyone plays the game differently - and that is OK! Enabling everyone to play their life's best game is still the manager's highest calling.
Helping people achieve their highest potential is a supreme privilege available to all managers.
Will we exercise our privilege? It will be hard but what is worth having and, yet, is easy?

The first quality for any leader is to know every member of his team have an unique style and to know the respective style.. And that gives a collaborative success.
Rather asking everyone to do everything.. the best way is you make people deliver in what they are best at.

So true Sourabh, in fact , as a leader to take the organisation or the team on a new charted path , one has to be reasonably unreasonable in approach . It, compared to the BAU approach which is good for maintenance phase , is an appropriate style of leadership in the growth phase . 🤔
