Follow your art’s voice 🖋️ Today, when I logged into LinkedIn, I received a message saying I had been invited to contribute to collaborative articles on LinkedIn. It surprised me because there was a range of topics, from writing to editing. I decided to share my personal view on one question that stood out to me, and I want to share my answer with you. ❔The question was: How do you create a unique voice and vision as a video editor? 🎞️ Editing is fascinating because it’s visual storytelling at its best. When you start editing a video, you have a structure (either in your head or on paper—I always keep it in my head), and with that structure, you begin shaping the order in which the story will unfold. But at the same time, the video has its own “life.” 🗣️ As you edit, the video will speak to you, and you need to follow its voice. When something doesn’t seem to fit or feel right, listen to that voice. It’s like playing with your knowledge and the visual language of the video itself. I’ve noticed this happens in the arts in general. A few years ago, I interviewed a painter who told me, “This painting is talking to me, and I’m following it.” 🎭 Art pieces have their own soul, which merges with yours, so you must honor both. Otherwise, the result may feel soulless.
