It may be stating the obvious, but creativity and innovation are going to be vital if hospitality businesses are to succeed in this ever-evolving, competitive and demanding marketplace. So it was good that so many operators and suppliers met up at Oxford Brookes University last week to share perspectives on driving innovation across the sector. The augural Hospitality Innovation Day was devised by the Hospitality Sector Council and the Innovation Working Group and hosted by the chair of Caravan, Red Engine and Turtle Bay, Jane O'Riordan. As well as being a catalyst for ideas, it was also a demonstration to Government of the creativity, drive and ability to collaborate that there is in the sector. Let’s hope the initiative continues after the election. We have been working on a huge project for six months with our friends at Tourism Training Australia for an industry we love and can't live without - our precious #hospitality industry! It's an industry that has brought us all so much joy, be it our daily coffee, a hot pie at the footy or a sandwich on the run, a delicious farm-to-plate fine dining experience, a holiday in the country or the beach, a takeaway or delivery on a slack night in, a glass of wine, a cold beer at your local, a fresh juice or a mindblowing cocktail, and so many many more unforgettable experiences shared with loved ones, colleagues and friends or on our own. Hundreds of thousands of people apply their skills and time to grow, pick, fish, prepare, truck, manufacture, make, cook, bake, pour, serve, clean, transact, entertain, review ( and yes, regulate), and do all this for us, day in and day out. We kept hearing heartbreaking stories of financial hardship - of businesses forced to close their doors and lay off staff, and of others acquiring, thriving and growing. It didn't make sense. So we have decided to do what we do best—offer a safe place to learn, upskill, collaborate, and innovate, address challenges together, identify opportunities, and leverage technology and new ways inspired by others. We are creating an online community that's free and open 24/7 for anyone who cares about the future of the hospitality industry. Everyone is welcome. We kick off with an Innovation Summit on 12 - 16 August 2024, bringing together a highly diverse cross-section of hospitality industry professionals to share their insights in four major areas of focus this year: workforce, sustainability, finance and ops, and the customer. Each panel is followed by a "Have Your Say", where you can leave a comment on the issues board or join the conversation. We will gather this data, share it with the community, and use it to inform the hospo innovation agenda, program, and activities for the year. Ignite Hospo runs from August 24 to August 25. It is not a conference. It is a twelve-month program that flexes to meet your busy life and needs when you need it. Every live session is converted to on-demand content, so it's always available anytime. All you have to do is register to join—there are no catches - it's free! One thing I love about my role is spending time visiting sites and team. Brings me back to humble beginnings. So I was recently wondering how do you keep team invested and continually developing? We have recently implemented an activation, visiting one site a week as part of: Permanently Unique’s Train Me Tuesdays. The idea is to encourage teams to attend high energy, high engagement sessions in which we aim to build their knowledge even 1% - marginal gains! One simple nugget of knowledge that they might use to enhance a guest experience moving forward. Introducing Luke Fryer, CEO and Founder at Harri, and this week’s exceptional #IndustryInspiration ! 👏💙 Thus far, Luke has had an incredible career in hospitality, beginning in 1999 when he opened the first Burger King franchise in Australia. Years later, in 2007, Luke moved to New York continuing his career in the restaurant space, when he noticed the same challenge emerging across hospitality – building, hiring, and retaining strong teams. As a result, Harri was born. “We launched Harri in 2013 as a talent marketplace and a way to connect jobs and candidates. Over time, we realised it wasn’t a marketplace problem, it was a process problem to be solved by a new generation of software built for hospitality.
