A very disappointing day for rugby in Australia. It seems history is set to repeat itself with another Australian Super Rugby Team ceasing to exist. It is naive to think reducing the professional contracting opportunities by 20% will increase depth and competition. The NRL and AFL have 17 and 18 teams respectively, Rugby will have 4. Which code do you think juniors will steer towards? A 1/4 chance or a 1/17 or 1/18, less career opportunities will equal less depth as potential players seek certainty and better odds of making it professional. How could a governing body be ignorant to a franchise operating insolvent for multiple years? I question whether this failure of corporate governance raises more concerns for the future of professional rugby in Australia.
STATEMENT | RUGBY VICTORIA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Rugby Australia has made the heartbreaking decision to discontinue the Melbourne Rebels beyond the 2024 Super Rugby season. This decision has a significant impact on staff, families, players, fans, volunteers and elite pathways in Victoria. The hard work and dedication that has gone into the Melbourne Rebels behind the scenes over the past 14 years cannot be overstated and we extend our deepest sympathies to all during this difficult time. We must remember that the game of Rugby is built from the grassroots. It is about the people who play it, who administer it, who coach it and those who support it. Let's stand together now, more than ever, to support Victorian Rugby Union. #StrongerBindsVictoria #VicRugby #VicProud

During the 2023 Rugby World Cup, I stumbled upon a clip (https://lnkd.in/gk9ZJ2_u) featuring rugby coach Warren Gatland. In it, he extols the virtue of being 'the best at everything that requires no talent' in the rugby game. This includes getting-off the ground quickly, chasing the kick, and getting back on defence - all of which only require effort, not talent. Listening to him made me think that by being the best at these tasks, all of us have the makings of a world-class rugby player. This is even if the flashier rugby skills of (say) side-steps and offloads are beyond us. This made me think of how a good piece of oral advocacy is similarly built on the back of being 'the best at everything that requires no talent'. Whether it is in rolling up our sleeves to draw-up a chronology of events, writing out a question tree for cross-examination, or in researching the legal test that the client's claim must meet. If we take the effort to carry out these tasks, all of us have the makings of a good advocate. This is even if the silkier advocacy skills of (say) having a quick wit for a good come-back is beyond us.

What do you do with the sheep after you get them over the bridge.
England Rugby legend Sir Bill Beaumont has received the Freedom of the City of London, in recognition of his outstanding services to sport. Bill made his debut for England in 1975, going on to win 34 caps and leading England to their first Grand Slam for 33 years in 1980. He also captained the The British & Irish Lions and later managed them on the tour to New Zealand in 2005. Knighted in 2019, he was also the second-longest serving captain on BBC’s ‘A Question of Sport’ quiz show, for 14 years. https://bit.ly/3QXA2NT

We've all been buzzing since winning a Rugby Black List award and feel more than ever that serious discussion and action needs to be taken around this fundamental question: "If rugby in England wants to engage with diverse communities how will this be achieved if diverse communities have no access to rugby?" In highly populated urban areas the required space for schools and clubs to play rugby on doesn't exist in sufficient amounts. Interesting fact - 50% of the total BAME population in England live in 3 cities. London, Birmingham & Manchester. Any thoughts? Also consider that you can't start to fudge the game (which is something the powers that be are currently working on) to create 5 a side touch and call it rugby. The beauty of rugby as we know it is that all shapes and sizes have an equal and important part to play on the pitch. Without this element it simply isn't rugby.

It will be extremely useful in preparing the teams and their High Performance plans, with objectives set for the qualifying process for Rugby World Cup 2027.
The Super Rugby Americas started with an enthralling performance from Dogos and Pampas (Unión Argentina de Rugby) The competition also includes franchise teams from Confederação Brasileira de Rugby, Chile Rugby, USA Rugby, Unión de Rugby del Uruguay and UNION PARAGUAYA DE RUGBY (U.R.P.). Patrick Guthrie, COO of the American Raptors said: “We at the Raptors are all about creating rugby players who can go on to be Eagles. We think a union-driven and union-based high-performance model that Super Rugby Americas represents is a far more effective and well-designed concept for developing national team players.” (He refers to Major League Rugby) #coaching #team #top #sports #performance #world #lideres

The impact of Covid-19 on both businesses and communities has indeed been profound. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of relationships over transactions, emphasizing the value of collaboration, communication, and empathy. As businesses shift from a purely transactional approach to one that values relational dynamics, they foster environments where innovation and skill development thrive. This cultural shift towards nurturing soft skills and building partnerships can lead to more resilient and sustainable business models. Similarly, communities have faced challenges that require collective action and support. The pandemic has shown that community strength lies in unity and the ability to adapt and support one another. Coordinated efforts, whether through sponsorship, partnerships, or community initiatives, can help rebuild and reinforce community bonds, making them more robust against future adversities. The example of Westaway Sausages Ltd. and Newton Abbot Rugby Club illustrates how businesses can play a pivotal role in supporting and enhancing community spirit. By investing in local institutions and activities, businesses can contribute to the social fabric and well-being of the communities they are part of. In essence, the legacy of Covid-19 could be a shift towards a more relationship-oriented approach in both business and community settings, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, resilience, and mutual support.
