Public trust and confidence in policing are crucial for maintaining a safe community. However, recent actions by the Surrey Police PSD and Surrey Information Management Team are undermining that trust. One individual's experience highlights the lack of responsiveness and professionalism within these departments. It is concerning to see that complaints upheld by the Surrey Police PSD have led to a loss of confidence in the system. The lack of response in this case only adds to the perception that raising a complaint is pointless. This is not acceptable. It is important for these departments to take responsibility and work towards rebuilding public trust. As members of the community, we have the right to expect professional and responsive service from our police force. Andy Rundle, Surrey Police PSD and Surrey Information Management Team must take steps to address these issues and restore confidence in policing.

Agree that a stop and search should be approached with dignity and respect. Weed out the officers who abuse their position - don't continue to police-bash our law enforcement. It is not clear to me why many people have an issue with stop and search conducted with dignity. Yes, I have. Outside Oakwood station some years ago. No issue with it. Issues arising might be late for work/appointment/catching a train/attending emergency hospital and such like. Some people may feel embarrassed. The problem is not stop and search. It's the way we demonise it in operation. "The police are not doing enough to curb crime/knife crime". Untie their hands. Look to weeding out the gung-ho idiots and let them - police. Education - make it known: Caught packing? Caution. Caught again? Automatic five year sentence. Education - make it known: Acting like a street rat - commit homicide? Life imprisonment. Human rights? What of the rights of the deceased and their loved ones? Of the possible generations of lives that person may have brought into this world? and who those people might have been, what they would have contributed to in our communities? It's always someone elses fault right? Wrong. Responsibility, accountability - culpability and resilience. Cause and effect.

Assaults on police The good news is that the rate of assaults on police officers is diminishing, however one assault is one too many. Reducing risk is one of the strategies being employed to minimise assaults, however if and when they do occur compensation is often available. According to analysis by the FSU, police forces in England and Wales have actually increased the number of ‘non-crime hate incidents’ (NCHIs) they’re recording per year since the last government introduced a statutory code of practice regarding the recording of NCHIs, advising police to use their common sense about when to create a record. That forced the College of Policing to issue new guidance telling the police to only record an incident as an NCHI when the subject involved is actually motivated by intentional hostility or prejudice towards a person based on a protected characteristic – henceforth, mere perception of ‘hate’ would not be enough – and where there is a real risk of significant harm or a future criminal offence being committed. Unfortunately, it appears the new guidance has not been shared with officers on the ground. The FSU submitted FOI requests to all 43 police forces in England and Wales to find out if the number of NCHIs they were recording had gone down since the new Code of Practice was introduced in June 2023. According to our analysis of the data we got back, the number being recorded each year has actually increased. Overall, the increase was 1.6%, but in certain regions it increased by much more. Across the 16 regions which saw an increase (out of 29 we analysed, covering 73% of the population of England and Wales), the number recorded has gone up by 28.2% since parliament legislated to bring the number down.

The circumstances surrounding last weeks domestic violence related double murder of two Sydney men, have been both tragic, and unusual. From a celebrity chasing, attention seeking police officer, who committed this heinous crime with his service issued firearm, to a Police Commissioner declaring the incident a ‘crime of passion’, and oddly quoting Taylor Swift ‘There will always be haters, haters like to hate, isn’t that what Taylor (Swift) says’, the families of the victims have hoped for some level of closure, which sadly came yesterday with the discovery of the victims remains. Not only has this incident managed to continue to shine a light on the disturbingly high incidence of Domestic and Family Violence homicides in our community, but perhaps it has also highlighted an opportunity for police services to consider their psychological assessment processes for applicants during recruiting activities. In most circumstances, apart from initial applicant psychometric testing, there is no ongoing compliance focused programme requiring police officers to undergo regular psychological assessment throughout their careers (unless working in child abuse, covert policing, or similar roles). This is of concern, considering the highly stressful, emotionally challenging, traumatic, and chaotic environment that police officers operate in every single day. Moving forward, would it be worthwhile for all police recruit applicants to be interviewed by an experienced psychologist, as part of the selection process?
