The pressure is building for the EU to embrace dual-use research, with EU leaders including research and innovation in dual-use technologies in the 2024-2029 agenda for the first time and the Science, Research and Innovation Performance (SRIP) report, released by the Commission last week, underlining the need for the EU to take defence R&D more seriously. EU investment in defence has seen a steady increase over the past five years, but most spending is on equipment. Meanwhile, spending on basic and applied research, and technology validation has fallen behind.

Includes a significant investment in Land Autonomy where we plan to address the barriers limiting the efficient and effective adoption and exploitation of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems in land operations.

The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA and the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP) have taken a significant step towards future #collaboration by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI). 🤝 This agreement outlines potential areas of future collaboration, aiming to drive #innovation and boost #competitiveness. 🚀 Initial exchanges between representatives of The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA and EACP already took place in July 2024, and the signing of the LOI on 11 October, during the Meet4Composite exhibition in Istanbul, now concretizes their commitment to further collaboration. As noted by Roberto Frassine, President of EuCIA, which is headquartered in Brussels, „innovation is essential for the future of the composites‘ industry, especially in aerospace, where advanced materials are paving the way for new mobility solutions and reduced emissions.“ 🌍 Yalcin Yilmazkaya, Lead of the EACP’s Working Group Supply Chain & Technology, added: „The European aerospace sector needs to enhance its innovation capabilities to remain competitive globally. Region's SMEs win defence funding to drive innovation 🛡️🪙 Three UK SMEs have been awarded funding through the latest rounds of the Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP). Bristol-based High Temperature Material Systems Ltd, OpenWorks Engineering Ltd in Northumberland and Oxford's Mind Foundry Ltd. will each collaborate with a higher-tier supplier who will mentor them over the duration of a forthcoming defence project. They will receive a government grant worth 50 per cent of the project value to develop innovative new solutions that meet UK defence challenges and increase capability in the UK defence supply chain. DTEP, which seeks to improve the competitiveness of the UK Defence supply chain, is sponsored by the MOD’s Directorate of Industrial Strategy and Exports (DISE) and delivered through the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), Innovate UK, and ADS Group Ltd.
