At 5G Techritory, we discussed Europe’s role in advancing quantum technology, focusing on the timing and value of investment and Europe’s potential to lead. I emphasized that while applications might still take time, the market is already active, currently valued at $848 million and projected to reach $106 billion by 2040. Quantum computers are already being sold, primarily for research and training, which is crucial for building the talent pipeline. Investing now is essential, not only for building knowledge and capability but also for preparing the talent pool needed for the future industry. Europe has a strong foundation to lead, not just compete, by investing in essential infrastructure like quantum chip production. Establishing this infrastructure would not only foster an ecosystem that naturally attracts talent and investment, but also creates a sustainable and independent technological base in Europe. Drawing parallels with AI, I noted that those who control the hardware play a decisive role in setting industry norms and standards. Thus, European Union’s strategic investment in critical infrastructure would not only ensure competitiveness but also allow it to influence the ethical and regulatory landscape of this emerging field – vital elements for Europe to establish global influence in quantum tech. The facility will immediately benefit local industries such as pharma, finance, and manufacturing in Switzerland. It will be accessible to companies, projects, start-ups and for academic partnerships globally IV. Private Investment Funded through private investment, this initiative aims to drive transformative innovation. The Staehelin family, the main investors behind uptownBasel and QuantumBasel, has played a crucial role in making this vision a reality V.
